This may fall under "If it hurts, don't do it?", but things like:

(let (parens-require-spaces defun-prompt-regexp)
  (require 'cl)
  (custom-set-variables
   '(parens-require-spaces t)
   '(defun-prompt-regexp (cl-assert parens-require-spaces))))

used to work before commit 071722e.
