It turns out to be these lines:

                         (message (format #f (G_ "'~a~{ ~a~}' exited \
with status ~a; output follows:~%~%~{  ~a~%~}")

It seems like the reader isn't parsing the \ escape properly somehow.

But which guile version, which reader (guile has two due to $REASONS),
...
