GNOME is moving away from such a versioning scheme, reflected by this 2
year old commit of mine: 5dd3acd0a0941ff9764959b313aae48095c66312
("import: gnome: Improve version handling logic.").

Thus, the use case seems to have vanished.  Let's close for now.
