Is there some interest in this patch or should we drop it?

Personally I don't know easy ways to rebase patches like that and any
modification pushed to gnu/local.mk will break the patch.

At the time it was sent, it was on top of the following commit:

If there is some interest I could rebase it but it would need to be
reviewed before it is broken again.
