The original intention is to make `async-shell-command` and `shell-command` default to `evil-normal-state' by adding a hook in which checks if `this-command' is `shell-command' or `async-shell-command'. As a result, I found that they behave differently. It looks too odd that `async-shell-command' is implemented in `shell-command' but it has a different semantic. Since the buffer is in `fundamental-mode', there is no way to access `shell-mode-map' where user maybe define their own bindings. I'm curious about the reason why it's a feature. Why the synchronous `shell-command' should be in `fundamental-mode' while the async doesn't. -- Zhiwei Chen From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Apr 25 12:51:36 2021 Received: (at 47991) by debbugs.gnu.org; 25 Apr 2021 16:51:36 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:43614 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1lahyq-0007ij-C8 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 25 Apr 2021 12:51:36 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([209.51.188.92]:53300) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1lahyp-0007iX-Df for 47991@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 25 Apr 2021 12:51:35 -0400 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([2001:470:142:3::e]:39627) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1lahyj-0006pr-Ru; Sun, 25 Apr 2021 12:51:29 -0400 Received: from 84.94.185.95.cable.012.net.il ([84.94.185.95]:4619 helo=home-c4e4a596f7) by fencepost.gnu.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.2:RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:256) (Exim 4.82) (envelope-from ) id 1lahyZ-0003xS-GL; Sun, 25 Apr 2021 12:51:20 -0400 Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2021 19:50:59 +0300 Message-Id: <83bla2l34c.fsf@gnu.org> From: Eli Zaretskii To: Zhiwei Chen , Richard Stallman In-Reply-To: <87tunu2ubx.fsf@gmail.com> (message from Zhiwei Chen on Mon, 26 Apr 2021 00:38:10 +0800) Subject: Re: bug#47991: 28.0.50; inconsistency between async-shell-command and shell-command References: <87eef02ciz.fsf@gmail.com> <83r1j0lzla.fsf@gnu.org> <87tunu2ubx.fsf@gmail.com> X-Spam-Score: -2.3 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 47991 Cc: 47991@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -3.3 (---) > From: Zhiwei Chen > Cc: 47991@debbugs.gnu.org > Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2021 00:38:10 +0800 > > I'm curious about the reason why it's a feature. Why the synchronous > > `shell-command' should be in `fundamental-mode' while the async doesn't. > I don't know, it's been that way since 1995. Maybe Richard remembers. This decision seems correct to me. The code of Shell mode is mainly meant for (1) handling the output as it arrives asynchronously and (2) editing shell input. In M-!, there is no need for either of those things. -- Dr Richard Stallman (https://stallman.org) Chief GNUisance of the GNU Project (https://gnu.org) Founder, Free Software Foundation (https://fsf.org) Internet Hall-of-Famer (https://internethalloffame.org) From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun May 02 05:11:32 2021 Received: (at 47991) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 May 2021 09:11:32 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:41694 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ld88S-0002RK-63 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 02 May 2021 05:11:32 -0400 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:56200) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ld88Q-0002RB-Vb for 47991@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 02 May 2021 05:11:31 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:In-Reply-To:Date: References:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=9NaYE9WkF51RuHcYM9vp6QmXptDX/zWWB/DL0gRFGQ4=; b=VmpdGffywkEQXTT5UmMDB5in+s b4X5FXKPlc7ZIsx2x5BalibpNkTIWT4ByhqhV4wHwd11eVZ2UV8IYgtu0ifFAPKYUPoWBZ40xcTID pVv/ZVi6WKqlDmCUTNCxX5CayT+3Yt2vNXnz5oiK4icTg0OcciW9tnR7dqbR6SSpQ82I=; Received: from cm-84.212.220.105.getinternet.no ([84.212.220.105] helo=xo) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1ld88I-0004lF-Dq; Sun, 02 May 2021 11:11:24 +0200 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen To: Richard Stallman Subject: Re: bug#47991: 28.0.50; inconsistency between async-shell-command and shell-command References: <87eef02ciz.fsf@gmail.com> <83r1j0lzla.fsf@gnu.org> <87tunu2ubx.fsf@gmail.com> <83bla2l34c.fsf@gnu.org> X-Now-Playing: Nico's _Do Or Die_: "Heroes" Date: Sun, 02 May 2021 11:11:21 +0200 In-Reply-To: (Richard Stallman's message of "Mon, 26 Apr 2021 00:41:53 -0400") Message-ID: <87im41h552.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/28.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam.
