Thanks to all for clarifying things for me.
And thanks for considering my suggestion to
have a single mode, whether or not it makes
sense overall.

I trust you will work out a good way to handle
things.  I hope whatever changes are made won't
negatively affect my use of Emacs (and I expect
they won't).

[Other changes that were made after Emacs 26.3
mean that Emacs 27.1 is completely unusable for
me with my setup.  I haven't been able to track
down just what the culprits are.  That's a big
problem for me, and it probably adds to my
wariness of changes to minibuffer behavior.]
