What effect does it have for the formatting as the "," and "/" are not output? Thanks for the bug report. Those lines are automatically generated by help2man, so I'm cc'ing this to bug-help2man@gnu.org and will close the coreutils bug report. The problem is that "tail --help" outputs this: -c, --bytes=[+]NUM output the last NUM bytes; or use -c +NUM to output starting with byte NUM of each file -f, --follow[={name|descriptor}] output appended data as the file grows; an absent option argument means 'descriptor' -F same as --follow=name --retry -n, --lines=[+]NUM output the last NUM lines, instead of the last 10; or use -n +NUM to output starting with line NUM and help2man transforms that into: .TP \fB\-c\fR, \fB\-\-bytes\fR=\fI\,[\/\fR+]NUM output the last NUM bytes; or use \fB\-c\fR +NUM to output starting with byte NUM of each file .TP \fB\-f\fR, \fB\-\-follow[=\fR{name|descriptor}] output appended data as the file grows; .IP an absent option argument means 'descriptor' .TP \fB\-F\fR same as \fB\-\-follow\fR=\fI\,name\/\fR \fB\-\-retry\fR .TP \fB\-n\fR, \fB\-\-lines\fR=\fI\,[\/\fR+]NUM output the last NUM lines, instead of the last 10; or use \fB\-n\fR +NUM to output starting with line NUM ------------=_1645655821-967-1 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Received: (at submit) by debbugs.gnu.org; 27 Feb 2021 07:32:45 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:43116 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1lFu5l-0006GN-Fa for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 02:32:45 -0500 Received: from lists.gnu.org ([209.51.188.17]:34540) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1lFu5j-0006GE-Q6 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 02:32:44 -0500 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([2001:470:142:3::10]:56742) by lists.gnu.org with esmtps (TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1lFu5j-0004Bh-16 for bug-coreutils@gnu.org; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 02:32:43 -0500 Received: from vhrz1173.hrz.uni-marburg.de ([137.248.1.43]:55575) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtps (TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1lFu5d-0003lk-QQ for bug-coreutils@gnu.org; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 02:32:42 -0500 Received: from vhrz1173.hrz.uni-marburg.de (vhrz1173.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE [137.248.1.43]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ADH-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by vhrz1147.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4DndX740cbzn48 for ; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 08:32:23 +0100 (CET) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=staff.uni-marburg.de; s=dkim; t=1614411143; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding:in-reply-to: references; bh=plYf/xUJIzuh9xlsxmKzrIrrb/GSgIdJd2VmGGi1j1A=; b=vBJmFOxeF0aMLtM8Nsi1ZatuPBvIKZYfJMKtOZ7lWqT+fE1BPmJWEawSpv5uvOxksxVCUD NRIwWb1AgtRcRECZMsyIjrqnAmxOWSGjTZJRCQjWMtUd9eMZp4cxi+SUQnYMpeRWuY6NtM MMwhopzXBEVvmw7Ai+DiSrKfDdcYUto= Received: from [10.0.1.9] (p54864b02.dip0.t-ipconnect.de [84.134.75.2]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by vhrz1147.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 4DndX72lmwzn3C for ; Sat, 27 Feb 2021 08:32:23 +0100 (CET) From: Reuti Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 10.3 \(3273\)) Subject: Man page of "tail" Message-Id: <6144B59E-7D23-4706-AAC8-71460CFEB281@staff.uni-marburg.de> Date: Sat, 27 Feb 2021 08:32:22 +0100 To: bug-coreutils@gnu.org X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3273) X-Rspamd-Score: -1.97 / 12.00 / 15.00 X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4DndX740cbzn48 Received-SPF: pass client-ip=137.248.1.43; envelope-from=reuti@staff.uni-marburg.de; helo=vhrz1173.hrz.uni-marburg.de X-Spam_score_int: -19 X-Spam_score: -2.0 X-Spam_bar: -- X-Spam_report: (-2.0 / 5.0 requ) BAYES_00=-1.9, DKIM_SIGNED=0.1, DKIM_VALID=-0.1, DKIM_VALID_AU=-0.1, SPF_HELO_NONE=0.001, SPF_PASS=-0.001 autolearn=ham autolearn_force=no X-Spam_action: no action X-Spam-Score: -1.6 (-) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: submit X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) Hi, I noticed some formatting issues in the man page of `tail`, and I wonder = whether they are intentional as they occur at some places. They are added to improve output rendered for printing (ps, pdf, dvi, etc): man -t tail | lpr -Pps man -Tpdf tail >tail.1.pdf As Paul noted, those escapes and other formatting are added by help2man, using a heuristic which mostly works, but seems a bit hit and miss with some of the tail flags: "--bytes=[+]NUM" as you identified doesn't fare well. Compare to ls flags "--block-size=SIZE" and "--color[=WHEN]". I'll take a look to see if I can do something to handle tail's output better. --bod From unknown Sat Jun 14 19:33:50 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#46808: Man page of "tail" Resent-From: Reuti Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-coreutils@gnu.org Resent-Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2022 15:48:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 46808 X-GNU-PR-Package: coreutils X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Andreas Schwab Cc: 46808@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 46808-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B46808.16458040819126 (code B ref 46808); Fri, 25 Feb 2022 15:48:01 +0000 Received: (at 46808) by debbugs.gnu.org; 25 Feb 2022 15:48:01 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:53499 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nNcp6-0002N8-Nf for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 25 Feb 2022 10:48:00 -0500 Received: from vhrz1173.hrz.uni-marburg.de ([137.248.1.43]:60239) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nNcp5-0002Mc-1M for 46808@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 25 Feb 2022 10:48:00 -0500 Received: from vhrz1173.hrz.uni-marburg.de (vhrz1173.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE [137.248.1.43]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ADH-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by vhrz1147.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4K4vLG2dWRzn1r; Fri, 25 Feb 2022 16:47:50 +0100 (CET) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=uni-marburg.de; s=dkim; t=1645804070; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:in-reply-to:in-reply-to: references:references; bh=gJlAiG2IzS4hzONv5kv8Fpzzhso8Zr7ghX6eWEwUBbM=; b=xqKBYwt3rXP1P1l5OVALnuVNRkDNZiZ6/izepjwR1cVGg8adePwSHrYztqiE5EwNbxHkds e7IPesesKAlyUtJ7lWUN/TVzbMwSIsEOkRMeBPTqDEkRBZ0sqMYi+9BHDv8U6axSqJ+SFI lF8qP32CjtwrK/wZTMrFrjVa7vC93Ls= Received: from ma15106.chemie.uni-marburg.de (ma15106.Chemie.Uni-Marburg.DE [137.248.150.142]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by vhrz1147.HRZ.Uni-Marburg.DE (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 4K4vLG0p4qzn7b; Fri, 25 Feb 2022 16:47:49 +0100 (CET) Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="Apple-Mail=_C2FA03AB-8E1A-4362-AC0D-52DA76882108"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1 Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.4 \(3445.104.21\)) From: Reuti In-Reply-To: <87sfs9rxsw.fsf@igel.home> Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2022 16:47:49 +0100 X-Mao-Original-Outgoing-Id: 667496869.40046-1b573d8a1d76dd039ef920248db2db78 Message-Id: <16B56139-944F-4CF5-9F0D-6B37F9D437CE@staff.uni-marburg.de> References: <6144B59E-7D23-4706-AAC8-71460CFEB281@staff.uni-marburg.de> <87sfs9rxsw.fsf@igel.home> X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.104.21) X-Rspamd-Score: -4.91 / 12.00 / 15.00 X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4K4vLG2dWRzn1r X-Spam-Score: -0.0 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) --Apple-Mail=_C2FA03AB-8E1A-4362-AC0D-52DA76882108 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > Am 24.02.2022 um 00:02 schrieb Andreas Schwab : >=20 > On Feb 27 2021, Reuti wrote: >=20 >> I'm not a `groff` expert, but the sequence "\,some-text\/" appears a = couple of times.
