Binary is built. But in the end of ‘make bootstrap’, and when I run the executable, I get this,

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
desired fingerprint: a34ddd269ef1a8b036d7dc1d011d235ea4a6b4889bc78aa11ed1e593906e85d1

emacs: could not load dump file "/Users/pankaj/work/code/savannah/emacs/src/emacs.pdmp": not built for this Emacs executable
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

I built on HEAD -> master -> 0f561ee55348ff451600cc6027db5940ee14606f

I think other people are also facing same issue. There is one email in
help-gnu-emacs list. This was the actual full message in the end of

This means 'emacs' was somehow produced without dumping, which is
strange. Did you see any error messages during the build?

Hearing the same complaint from other people without any significant
new details doesn't help in investigating the problem. If you have
the impression that we somehow dismiss the problem because you are the
only one reporting it, that impression is wrong.

So let's please keep looking into the problem on your system and try
to find out the reasons, okay? Don't worry about the others reporting
the same, we also read those reports and won't miss when they say
something important.

I am really sorry if my language gave an impression of complaint. Really
sorry about that. I was trying to tell if those other emails have any
clue.

Luckily I have kept that terminal open and copied the build log. As I am
inspecting it, I see that the configure script was run multiple
times. Is this normal? I haven’t noticed this before today.

There are no other errors in the build. Just in the end. That I shared
earlier in this thread.

BTW, is the build log automatically saved somewhere. Did I make
unnecessary effort to copy from the terminal. :-)

If you run "make bootstrap", it is normal to see the configure script
run twice, yes. Do you see it being run more than twice?

That just shows the error which you described when you submitted this
bug report.

At this point all I can suggest is to make a fresh clone, run the
build there, collect the log of the entire build in a file, and post
here that file.

I think I mentioned that I also got this exact same build failure on
Macos, but that it went away with a "make bootstrap"? Pankaj hasn't
said whether he's tried a bootstrap, though. (I think.)

He did (I think).

I've had similar problems to this too, and sometimes all it takes is
to rerun make. I've no idea why it happens and I can't replicate it.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Yes I ran ‘make bootstrap’ only. And then I ran it again; it gave
correct output.

Here is some analysis that I could do. Attached are the two log
files. I have kept meaningful names. The ‘build_clean.log’ was the
output after running ‘make bootstrap’ again immediately after the
erroneous build.

1. If you notice at the beginning of ‘build_error.log’ the cleanup ‘rm’
commands are missing; even though I used ‘make bootstrap’. And these
‘rm’ commands were run after the first execution of ‘configure’ (in case
of erroneous build). Second execution of ‘configure’ did not happen in
case of successful build (when I did ‘make bootstrap’ again -
build_clean.log).

2. To my surprise, ‘make -C ../admin/charsets all’ outputs “Nothing to
be done” in case of successful build. I thought ‘make bootstraps’
deletes everything and then starts configure/make. In case of erroneous
build, make in charsets did generate each map.

3. Same was the case with ‘make -C ../admin/grammers’ and a few other
directories.

4. Lots of charset reloading seen in ‘build_error.log’. That did not
happen in ‘build_clean.log’.

5. First ELC command, after emacs binary is built, produces
error. Perhaps because the binary and pdmp fingerprint mismatch.

One question: is the order of execution deterministic?

Also, the build is now working, should I close this bug?

I suggest to find out what are the prerequisites for these commands,
and then try to understand why they don't always run.

This is expected: "make bootstrap" doesn't everything. You need "make
extraclean" or somesuch to do that.

Likewise.

Expected, because they existed before the build.

I suspect some problem related to src/macuvs.h and its generation
during the build.

I saw this again today (on Catalina) on a "git pull; make -j4
bootstrap". The next "make -j4 bootstrap" worked OK, though.

So either this is because boostrap doesn't delete all the files needed
(it, confusingly enough, deletes less than "make extraclean"), or
there's a race condition here somewhere, perhaps?

This was a year ago, and I haven't seen this problem in a long while on
Macos, so it might have been fixed in the meantime, I guess?

Pankaj, are you still seeing this problem in recent Emacs versions?

I saw it on master earlier this week, but I was a naughty boy: I'd
C-c'd the build half way through because Iʼd forgotten to make a
change (and I donʼt use '-j', I like my mac not to crash).

I don’t have access to a Mac now. So I can’t really help there. But as
Robert pointed out. The problem might still be hanging around.
