Thanks for the report. Xref buffers have been doing this since bug#19466, as requested by Martin (see https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=19466#56). Perhaps Martin or others will chime in, but otherwise you seem to be making a good case for not doing this anymore. Great, so we can remove it (pushed as 6b10ce867f). As a result, C-M-v doesn't always scroll the "target location" window anymore (at least, not when there are at least 3 windows on the frame). I wonder if we can/should do something about it. Other standard commands don't seem to worry about that, though. Other standard commands don't seem to worry about that, though. I doubt that anybody cares. My suggestion back then was just bad. 'other-window-scroll-buffer' is an ill-advised concept which can fly only if the buffer where it is set locally is small (so a user will not wonder about what that buffer has been conceived for and, for example, ask questions about its modes or keymaps) is displayed for a short time only and the visibility of the buffer it refers to is absolutely crucial for the current workflow. Neither of these conditions is given in the present context and I doubt that they are given in any of the other occurrences of that variable. martin From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Jan 03 19:22:30 2021 Received: (at 45581-done) by debbugs.gnu.org; 4 Jan 2021 00:22:30 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:38908 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kwDdm-0002Xl-0n for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 03 Jan 2021 19:22:30 -0500 Received: from mail-ej1-f41.google.com ([209.85.218.41]:35949) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kwDdk-0002XY-Ah for 45581-done@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 03 Jan 2021 19:22:28 -0500 Received: by mail-ej1-f41.google.com with SMTP id lt17so34803604ejb.3 for <45581-done@debbugs.gnu.org>; Sun, 03 Jan 2021 16:22:28 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=sender:subject:to:references:from:message-id:date:user-agent :mime-version:in-reply-to:content-language:content-transfer-encoding; bh=Az7eZhCoIPKGaTo1pzsK1O2j0CW2E013K3NefeYcNfo=; b=Ho8xK0CR1ioodJKDSxraQB1iDMKd6bBKcEd3mJfc6ALX0eadu9a8JpqOAqBx9oxi3y d7fd4f1m2gv6m0HvOvUbmaCzDiqb/eWn40o6BeawscGi3IOb/rXym4nL2DNV2EkzsvQn 0SeaIHCXTmXiZrpPz/tOlqsEFLgI0WPRmJdaRHxQCl7Fpr5bGjA4XzmQqGcR2rdSpcpe vCwSrj0JtP6glAdUMQjajH/GKYa2DJAIsvkRK7gfZpZ3atAGm+5eCCGfY9rFi+9CZ0Ly M1m5j4qyCU3blfS4/fWjdoGniYqjKTTy/XqwIpXGXeXawcQCAqmckMUtuKOPkaNQodcQ lIPg== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:sender:subject:to:references:from:message-id :date:user-agent:mime-version:in-reply-to:content-language :content-transfer-encoding; bh=Az7eZhCoIPKGaTo1pzsK1O2j0CW2E013K3NefeYcNfo=; b=hIvIG/ER9gW2tg+Ath3OytNQTGK0U19mpfv6MnqURogI/mUSJFFekrsnqmhKeexGkg pQFxnh+ltIu8vGCYCcxyXPtfHRqHVOB1givuxMJZ7ZV+nZwtwyRsC1CWHhP29U2v3rDr qALJ+KOqazSB0UFds5f/QQXjdehLB+VKFxJIWioq2XAp4ODjasa1Kz2Z9U/M7Ewqy6kP KXnXW7OO4AoFKRgDH6A+S/VCMpigMnU8RrwANkjPe947feieP6Or1m35qlxGNIY5jNn2 a0i7/VxzHEO/Wk2CiE+Rrqyr+L1Y41Izv7H1b/UUvRvSA2EilVo9L5ibZNG/+zEG/0zM QRqw== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM533QBklSJq7XCPSic2ZyxvA0gSDhF4qfZxLo8wJolV/Bvj/uSPY4 YYkTYO+FJwWKFqdu/3O8B/s3qes7oALs9A== X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJyUDIot3S5wd8dcyH2P+7wUmRkEJdCujaIiSvsbmQW3I1UhBCBT6ODZKFY6Gvf4gu/KdZe3Kg== X-Received: by 2002:a17:906:d8dc:: with SMTP id re28mr65228273ejb.168.1609719742301; Sun, 03 Jan 2021 16:22:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.0.6] ([46.251.119.176]) by smtp.googlemail.com with ESMTPSA id f8sm43023653eds.19.2021.01.03.16.22.20 (version=TLS1_3 cipher=TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 bits=128/128); Sun, 03 Jan 2021 16:22:21 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: bug#45581: 28.0.50; C-M-v in xref buffers shows a different buffer when scrolling To: martin rudalics , =?UTF-8?Q?Daniel_Mart=c3=adn?= , 45581-done@debbugs.gnu.org References: <05967589-387a-a450-f3d5-7aaac90f5648@yandex.ru> <4662e629-a85a-7bfe-6117-d7d774cceec2@gmx.at> From: Dmitry Gutov Message-ID: <1a587b4e-7679-c3bf-c17a-89a9dfac6b3d@yandex.ru> Date: Mon, 4 Jan 2021 02:22:19 +0200 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.10.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-Language: en-US Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Spam-Score: 0.2 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 45581-done X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.8 (/) On 03.01.2021 10:40, martin rudalics wrote: > I doubt that anybody cares.  My suggestion back then was just bad. > 'other-window-scroll-buffer' is an ill-advised concept which can fly > only if the buffer where it is set locally is small (so a user will not > wonder about what that buffer has been conceived for and, for example, > ask questions about its modes or keymaps) is displayed for a short time > only and the visibility of the buffer it refers to is absolutely crucial > for the current workflow.  Neither of these conditions is given in the > present context and I doubt that they are given in any of the other > occurrences of that variable.
