Thanks!  The char is 0x047e, and Sans Mono indeed doesn't have it:

                Char 0x045f -> Index 926
                Char 0x0462 -> Index 927
                Char 0x0463 -> Index 928
                Char 0x0472 -> Index 929
                Char 0x0473 -> Index 930
                Char 0x0490 -> Index 931

So presumably gnome-terminal is fetching the glyph from somewhere else
and then massaging it into the appropriate size.
