Not that I > have seen the file in Trash. Please try to give more detailed bug reports with recipes starting from "emacs -Q". I reproduced this bug by setting: (setq delete-by-moving-to-trash t trash-directory "~/Trash/") and then going to "/ssh:other-host:/tmp/" and deleting a file. As you say, the file isn't moved to ~/Trash. This is because: (defun tramp-get-remote-trash (vec) "Determine remote `trash' command. This command is returned only if `delete-by-moving-to-trash' is non-nil." (and delete-by-moving-to-trash (with-tramp-connection-property vec "trash" (tramp-message vec 5 "Finding a suitable `trash' command") (tramp-find-executable vec "trash" (tramp-get-remote-path vec))))) Tramp is looking for an executable on the remote host called "trash"? Which doesn't exist. Shouldn't Tramp then move the file to `trash-directory' instead of giving up and just deleting the file? If this is working as designed, it should at least be mentioned in the doc string(s) and the manual. -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From unknown Tue Aug 19 14:22:44 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#44217: bug#44216: 28.0.50; Incorret during delete in Tramp: Trashing...done Resent-From: Michael Albinus Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Mon, 26 Oct 2020 13:13:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 44217 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Lars Ingebrigtsen Cc: 44217@debbugs.gnu.org, Jean Louis Received: via spool by 44217-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B44217.160371792731348 (code B ref 44217); Mon, 26 Oct 2020 13:13:01 +0000 Received: (at 44217) by debbugs.gnu.org; 26 Oct 2020 13:12:07 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:38842 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kX2IA-00089Y-Mm for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Oct 2020 09:12:06 -0400 Received: from mout.gmx.net ([212.227.17.21]:34099) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kX2I9-000892-L5 for 44217@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 26 Oct 2020 09:12:06 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=gmx.net; s=badeba3b8450; t=1603717888; bh=LQ7f2IxEIu6MrezcQBPj/Bw7W6jBYybdfc+vD44oi2g=; h=X-UI-Sender-Class:From:To:Cc:Subject:References:Date:In-Reply-To; b=NoDiz4OWN5EB9f6OjZtIZ4EF1QkDTNmiq7r6/ulqIZ+bPdtY2XesdVtMWK7TUZJmI NdYRFyKzSqzFgolSP/DCN1XTTdC1c5QIedYHTqdij27n13nhnD5PhCfVot84O+/Pdf Rby48Kb4IiZhovjogZ2f+KQXBKRg2SweeST/14lY= X-UI-Sender-Class: 01bb95c1-4bf8-414a-932a-4f6e2808ef9c Received: from gandalf.gmx.de ([212.86.54.197]) by mail.gmx.com (mrgmx105 [212.227.17.168]) with ESMTPSA (Nemesis) id 1M3lYB-1kWl2B224J-000wIp; Mon, 26 Oct 2020 14:11:28 +0100 From: Michael Albinus References: <86mu0ayu2b.fsf@protected.rcdrun.com> <87eell2q96.fsf@gnus.org> Date: Mon, 26 Oct 2020 14:11:27 +0100 In-Reply-To: <87eell2q96.fsf@gnus.org> (Lars Ingebrigtsen's message of "Mon, 26 Oct 2020 12:14:29 +0100") Message-ID: <87imaxuo74.fsf@gmx.de> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/28.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Provags-ID: V03:K1:TEZiRIsuGbqiyXfLdrlxWyg3bjSnJR/yt3/HR23jk51YYKH62Qk uNxT/tnKG3gJWt53aisbAzaE9tzVNUWLpky2yDe0hYRtvmrp6cpDCi9sW84977zZXuMbrRg fvZBG39L1rwt16MI8UNeepEohOgpkvXuX3cgV1ot7iuQEoTaHML8QhUKnqLBFQhCNHyy0fR twe1WvzbQ1sEzC8gsGwDg== X-Spam-Flag: NO X-UI-Out-Filterresults: notjunk:1;V03:K0:ipbN/UEsjMw=:zRxRyEI6rVoY3xxNlvklTY RaHomxNsLHQ5jQiJwa7+26vTjB7XHqJUorNgm/vMp1rqVO9PHNHM4t7feNaFgKcho6hgrOIaY 8PZ9D/VPj77g6F2HYrMSqzcfzadXzkJ5a6AqKeEyu0JsgibuQwIQoOi9ZCSpkqZ0rJ20pjcdP j9NGQHQAcK1diuC0c/sAlIxqA/e35LqyOrFq6wNT19o03+U3waVButB96xTinFSHs4WPtU2H8 XYj7QXF5nk/bcPlvwP64FElpHGxmm73Dd+YkY1waceOr825k1cAp5bONpT21YfvtWTcj0OLxE sGSk5jmRa7RYT4nJaD7+0jntRfKFJgmgiDkSDgZCm91vbeYRw1yKmn9zvZKfy1ExdhSLSbM6d UsNSVjiy6bUEyn0XJvGvG0CTLLqX9/rQxCpX/+BeeMrd7oS0Zbbm0whRtgGsN94JsDfHflLZJ 2Bu9JtEJC9LGnfLYdCXYndEC/9h7Ki7qDefjFrBxAsv+gHDErlNQqzVVfYb9zWO4R0KRU/oz5 1y1uaV5Q2W7+NpVOhv1GFWhsqH9cRUW0IJTDW/zVSnULSRKHmITTA58EFS7VAiuSpiS78AeVC Axwm9UBqST6dN9gYb3vTfEGqNYXAemnUp7xc32Iu7/Jke/Iy5Ge4cDoes4pTU68ELj59k/5TZ vzKWFFHyfXBAi+LNFSJfom5EUveU6H5SHKCMqlPM101y7tnhP4cSDIwrRJdH2H7wu9YLhfiVs ubkwbFhCIZmu+u0Lug27dW6kfxjSZ7h7apJOfCGFKcoOEFtWwgpqOXE0HFgT9cMRWiD0Un3Wn 5pL4TJym0UYBDgEzz540IdwZMENApZfUNXh6UOO0lO6yQ5kZ32ag2H4vHuFFnDc3YTaaUnnf5 SD2a4AwmxdIYozcHpNrQ== X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.7 (-) Lars Ingebrigtsen writes: Hi Lars, >> I have the variable trash-directory set and files go to ~/tmp/Trash >> >> During Tramp ssh://example.com:~/ session I have delete a file and I can >> see the message: Trashing...done which should not be during Tramp >> session, as it gave me impression that file will be now transferred in >> background to my local Trash directory which not the case. Why that? `trash-directory' is defined as target for `move_file_to_trash'; it has nothing to do with deleting of remote files. And it would be a security flaw, if remote files would be moved to the local "~/Trash" directory. > If this is working as designed, it should at least be mentioned in the > doc string(s) and the manual. I believe it is mentioned. See the docstrings of `trash-directory' and `move-file-to-trash'. Well, the latter might explicitly state that it is not intended for remote files, but this is another game. Best regards, Michael. When the feature "move to trash" was designed, Tramp was not regarded as game player. I've tried to implement where it is possible, that is for ssh-like connections using the remote "trash" command, and for remote connections based on GVFS using the "gio trash" command. And that's it. For all other remote connections, we delete the file. >> And it would be a security flaw, if remote files would be moved >> to the local "~/Trash" directory. > > Well... no, not more than usual. Whether Tramp is involved or > not is orthogonal. (Except as an efficiency thing.) No, for Tramp it is different. You move the file from one machine to another. And you change the ownership: one file accessible only by root on one system, is then accessible by whomever on another machine, in the waste basket. That is a much more serious security flaw, and it would be unexpected for the majority of the users. For that reason, it is common practice to provide one waste basket on every physical file system, even for different file systems accessible on the same machine (aka "mounted"). >>> If this is working as designed, it should at least be mentioned in the >>> doc string(s) and the manual. >> >> I believe it is mentioned. If you've NFS-mounted (or SMB or whatever) a file system, and you delete it in Emacs, Emacs will move it to the trash can you've specified (if you've specified that Emacs should do so). But remote files accessed via Tramp don't do this, and that's unexpected (as demonstrated by this bug report). > For that reason, it is common practice to provide one waste basket on > every physical file system, even for different file systems accessible > on the same machine (aka "mounted"). I've never seen such a system -- any OS I've used that has had a trash can has had only one trash can (per user), as far as I can recall. >> Neither doc string says anything about remote files? >> >> --- >> >> Directory for =E2=80=98move-file-to-trash=E2=80=99 to move files and dir= ectories to. >> This directory is used only when the function =E2=80=98system-move-file-= to-trash=E2=80=99 >> is not defined. >> Relative paths are interpreted relative to =E2=80=98default-directory=E2= =80=99. >> If the value is nil, Emacs uses a freedesktop.org-style trashcan. > > It says it indirectly, because move-file-to-trash is intended for local > operation only. That's a roundabout > way of saying "indeed, this isn't documented at all". :-/ I stand corrected, move-file-to-trash works also for remote files. However, the result might be surprising. I've created a test file on a remote machine, "/ssh:ford:/tmp/aaa". Then I have called move-file-to-trash over this file. As expected, the file is removed on the remote machine, and it appears as "~/.local/share/Trash/files/aaa". However, in "~/.local/share/Trash/info/aaa.trashinfo" there is Path=3D/ssh%3aford%3a/tmp/aaa This will be unexpected, at least for tools which try to restore trashed files. However, perhaps Tramp shall call move-file-to-trash when deleting remote files, argument TRASH and variable delete-by-moving-to-trash are non-nil? Instead of calling the remote trash command? If the function system-move-file-to-trash is defined, it is called inside move-file-to-trash. For w32 systems, this function is defined. *BSD or macOS or whatever platform could define an own system-move-file-to-trash as well. Best regards, Michael. Tramp, using move-file-to-trash, will move the file to the local trash can. A user couldn't know, whether a trash can for a remote file will be located locally or remotely. So we shall use either a remote or a local trash can, and not mixed. The local trash can can be used always. The remote trash can can be used only, when the remote system offers the "trash" command. This doesn't happen by default. Best regards, Michael. Yeah, consistency would be good here, so just using the local trash can is probably the best option. -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From unknown Tue Aug 19 14:22:44 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#44217: bug#44216: 28.0.50; Incorret during delete in Tramp: Trashing...done Resent-From: Jean Louis Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2020 10:55:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 44217 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Michael Albinus Cc: Lars Ingebrigtsen , 44217@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 44217-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B44217.160388246821676 (code B ref 44217); Wed, 28 Oct 2020 10:55:01 +0000 Received: (at 44217) by debbugs.gnu.org; 28 Oct 2020 10:54:28 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:47358 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kXj63-0005dX-KU for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 28 Oct 2020 06:54:27 -0400 Received: from static.rcdrun.com ([95.85.24.50]:54235) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kXj61-0005dO-69 for 44217@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 28 Oct 2020 06:54:27 -0400 Received: from localhost ([::ffff:197.157.0.60]) (AUTH: PLAIN admin, TLS: TLS1.2,256bits,ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384) by static.rcdrun.com with ESMTPSA id 00000000002A0B3A.000000005F994DDE.00006069; Wed, 28 Oct 2020 10:54:22 +0000 Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2020 13:54:20 +0300 From: Jean Louis Message-ID: References: <86mu0ayu2b.fsf@protected.rcdrun.com> <87eell2q96.fsf@gnus.org> <87imaxuo74.fsf@gmx.de> <87tuuh15zm.fsf@gnus.org> <878sbtuhj6.fsf@gmx.de> <87ft60ru6g.fsf@gnus.org> <87v9evu1jv.fsf@gmx.de> <87r1pjtolo.fsf@gmx.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In-Reply-To: <87r1pjtolo.fsf@gmx.de> Organization: GNU.Support User-Agent: Mutt/+ (1036f0e) (2020-10-18) X-Spam-Score: 1.5 (+) X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "debbugs.gnu.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. Freedesktop specification is exclusively > > for GNU/Linux which accept parts or whole of Freedesktop, yet there > > are those which do not. > > GNU/Linux is the primary target for Emacs. It is perfect to support its spec. Freedesktop.org is not equivalent to GNU/Linux. It is maybe popular but it is not and need not be standard. From: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/ Interoperability specifications freedesktop.org produces specifications for interoperability, but we are not an official standards body. There is no requirement for projects to implement all of these specifications, nor certification. so GNU/Linux distributions may decide to adhere or may not. I hope you that Emacs should NOT be exclusively target for GNU/Linux distributions adopting some of specifications from Freedesktop.org as Emacs is widely used for example on BSD systems. Tramp is supporting various file systems and those file systems are not necessarily on GNU/Linux and thus I do not think it is necessary to include that support for Tramp considering wild range of file systems that can be accessed and those file system yet to come. Tramp should not target Freedesktop.org specification on remote file systems when variable `delete-by-moving-to-trash' is set, this variable should be local only. - If it is not set, I see no message from Tramp related to trashing when file is being deleted. - If it is set, then I see that Tramp is trashing the file, although it is not trashing the file in this context. - my remote system does not have any trash nor Freedesktop.org specification. - And I am using LineageOS/Replicant/Android remote file systems Let us also note that Freedesktop.org is for "desktop" so it is not specification for servers. Tramp accessing remote SSH or other servers should not assume automatically it is accessing remote desktops. Tramp may access remote files by using FTP, rsync, scp, and other protocols, I just hope that trash inclusion is not intertwined in those protocols where remote command execution would not even work. OpenSSH was targeting primarily OpenBSD and we use it wildly in GNU/Linux, it would be somehow unfair to say that Emacs with the Tramp which is using OpenSSH coming from OpenBSD is targeting only GNU/Linux. Emacs is widely used on all *BSD derivates and other OSes not being GNU/Linux. Documentation: Specifies whether to use the system’s trash can. When non-nil, certain file deletion commands use the function ‘move-file-to-trash’ instead of deleting files outright. This includes interactive calls to ‘delete-file’ and ‘delete-directory’ and the Dired deletion commands. I think that variable shall be local only, so that Tramp does not even attempt moving anything to Trash remotely. While that Trash thing would be convenient for me personally, I think it would be badly designed for above reasons. -- Jean Louis From unknown Tue Aug 19 14:22:44 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#44217: bug#44216: 28.0.50; Incorret during delete in Tramp: Trashing...done Resent-From: Michael Albinus Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Sun, 01 Nov 2020 12:01:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 44217 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Jean Louis Cc: Lars Ingebrigtsen , 44217@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 44217-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B44217.16042320099301 (code B ref 44217); Sun, 01 Nov 2020 12:01:01 +0000 Received: (at 44217) by debbugs.gnu.org; 1 Nov 2020 12:00:09 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:35797 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kZC1p-0002PU-6z for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 01 Nov 2020 07:00:09 -0500 Received: from mout.gmx.net ([212.227.15.19]:36021) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kZC1m-0002FB-7i for 44217@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 01 Nov 2020 07:00:08 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=gmx.net; s=badeba3b8450; t=1604231969; bh=gWadNGA7BjRsN0KKNL97SBDRbZmy2dfFNMShtAuzY8M=; h=X-UI-Sender-Class:From:To:Cc:Subject:References:Date:In-Reply-To; b=Yxhlf4//M8x8a4SQCW3diM1+Yo5cad6gyxsV1c1lsc8ZAlY68/NSviPGGDXa9/fVM fq3NyMxWWIi/wGYJNRRqL8gIFqbr76G8PdRZCsX6ohqgScpBJ6PdY6x5K0PENcUAvo eUHX3yNVGDNNs3Th1LESczQizgH90omfEbbVL1qw= X-UI-Sender-Class: 01bb95c1-4bf8-414a-932a-4f6e2808ef9c Received: from gandalf.gmx.de ([79.140.119.60]) by mail.gmx.com (mrgmx005 [212.227.17.190]) with ESMTPSA (Nemesis) id 1MplXz-1k1EB32saz-00qEGx; Sun, 01 Nov 2020 12:59:28 +0100 From: Michael Albinus References: <86mu0ayu2b.fsf@protected.rcdrun.com> <87eell2q96.fsf@gnus.org> <87imaxuo74.fsf@gmx.de> <87tuuh15zm.fsf@gnus.org> <878sbtuhj6.fsf@gmx.de> <87ft60ru6g.fsf@gnus.org> <87v9evu1jv.fsf@gmx.de> <87r1pjtolo.fsf@gmx.de> Date: Sun, 01 Nov 2020 12:59:26 +0100 In-Reply-To: (Jean Louis's message of "Wed, 28 Oct 2020 13:54:20 +0300") Message-ID: <87imapgue9.fsf_-_@gmx.de> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/28.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Provags-ID: V03:K1:70vZHp2LMeuVdIs38AesYb68U5bHNsiw8Kg4yjA/bk8g2Z3g9iO RJXO2mkKYWOyTDTH7TbhidfOFPqCJrqC09NOMkobuSklQrtKiUtIUuBbvB+XjZXIHly7aUK SYwU7PkkaYzQFoaUbFuAgL6dlakMUOIOGpHoKli6UPQF4caVzDInrwmCB/p1LzzoYitGFo7 e2T+LDhpj8aZSnTFJY/4g== X-Spam-Flag: NO X-UI-Out-Filterresults: notjunk:1;V03:K0:OXUY1tAFD0U=:ohocjWpiQFGZYIiegy9tGG LRlUG+YHRRyHrQca59HsLeH+oigLoTAq+6+bIbTqJDzLa8anNMCd7v1bxxly4UVsKljutEUGY YzK3KvYV776RrU5Hu1QaiTGWKNLAvxwsub0AjYUQbsaToxtKCANBdFd+7FlLRa/rIVohr75kJ BoS/zOVsz6aAvAJTLTLsiJzyOJzh4zC+ug5POcYX+1pd5p6X8IBLOt6fbT04gB6HnxXBGStXW ZQpy666Tc+oSNsHjkUDTPjEisL8OB6xlm0qkhVgAL52/oZgh+6Nyv6MXfP6Se6MCxJIEE1wNc TRGGsJjGQOmHXPLjQ6iG8Qlcw7zV4TGQMe5MOXsu78L6udG8BCKV1kMey1lpBte4F5KoFAQBl rOa0SqY/BLSZawzLrZoJZSBeQjzdgebnCmy4rEerFD8Wlam7oGuVUL5C/9Vqt2KZ0DL1DPxii AClEYOMd4TZq7MaTvIjMaPWwdfSe+ohtry8YVGrv628GHUG9NXUFpBQvhMM38zpT8gOB6nEh6 UfIbyTOIL13SF0xOU60SSFRvrmAqAetJPwO1gd2GOtX4/jGXmphPVp3n4qN+GGn9fHgerxWQY 6XkiNo2LljfwOly86YsDxCbP/3DZgNsJIOzjT7nnV4SEO0m2joKIp4Ia0OHIOj7auoHNXttxU 87qEJHRgWFOeS8kRC2M69i/hvLl0+cdujey8El/9n0rPUjtlK96YUzu8/L7E6OKOdIpOGmXwA 58p3r3P8jpmcgtDRYkV6yAqLcaK1dYCfzujl803QMkyAu3VQnmA88j11RKp5VoI4BAp/vS9TR TCsiuP52NYoGKPvxITU0L2rQXNe2F0sNlAt3gKRHw/T2Nu3OUeAofaPZNeICqMswVRAG2XbeP iWbYwzhfm+sRLiYcU+oA== Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.7 (-) Jean Louis writes: Hi Jean, >> > Not universal for every OSs. My testing was just find, deleted files on remote computers are transferred to local trash when I have variable delete-by-moving-to-trash defined. Often I am editing system files remotely and deleting backup~ files for security reasons. Those files are small and transferred automatically to local trash for some time, and I find it useful, with less fear if I make some problem remotely. For big files like videos and remote DVD images I will have to find way to turn off trashing when connecting to Tramp. I can make local directory variables if that works in Tramp too, or make small function to verify if size of files is like more than 100K and switch off delete by moving to trash. Thank you. Now close.
