  > (string-match (string-to-multibyte "o\303\270") "o\303\270")
  > => 0

  > (equal (string-to-multibyte "o\303\270") "o\303\270")
  > => nil

It is paradoxical, but I think it is correct.
Equal compares the type of the string, not just the
characters in it.
