Ah, thanks, that makes sense.  It is not my default font (which supports the composition) but the one picked up by HTML rendering.  How can I substitute/influence the fonts chosen by mm-shr?  (This problem seldom happens, I do not want to disable the use of proportional fonts for HTML emails.)
