Thanks!  Applied as 737b87cec8f8f2c27e287690d45ebf1fd57d08ae 
&c. with few changes.  Please take a look.

In particular, we don't coalesce updates to different packages 
unless necessary.  If you would ever come across packages that 
must be updated in lockstep, please add a comment.

I also tweaked the commit messages to follow our conventions.
