I think that large, wide monitors are increasingly common, and I suspect many people simply run Emacs in full screen mode. It's generally easier to read text if it's restricted to 50-80 characters or so.[1] Compare to how many large web sites no longer use the full screen width, as was common when the web was young, but restrict it to a predetermined maximum width even on large monitors. I mean, ideally I suppose we would pick that out from the CSS, but that sounds very hard to do. So, at least to my mind, changing the default of shr-width to 80 might be the next best thing. > But it would make sense to point users to shr variables, too, when they > are customising eww. It didn't even occur to me that anybody would do something like that. :-) Is that a thing people do? I mean... why? That'll leave a lot of unused screen real estate for most things Emacs displays. But, yes, rendering web pages very wide is usually not good for readability, but... if a person has decided to have full-width frames, doesn't that also mean that that person likes to have really long lines? -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat May 02 16:35:01 2020 Received: (at 40909) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 May 2020 20:35:01 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:54014 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jUyqi-0003jL-N5 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 May 2020 16:35:01 -0400 Received: from ted.gofardesign.uk ([67.225.143.91]:34078) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jUyqh-0003j8-Ar for 40909@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 May 2020 16:34:59 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=marxist.se; s=default; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:Date:References: In-Reply-To:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=KavAYTxuTdZQki4nXk2i928vUeppHH3lKoKIiLEWugc=; b=KjsmZfDdjrsopYLSxuDXHoKsEX s2gg2CRjvBF1xIqKRn+kUHzRet0lQZXXkUs/DG9wIt8Qg2JeUpJrEsxSwsGwZIYmi4DIwcvdqcLCZ LEZuP7PWNlWahYVUDOHU2wClKIGAaR/TVLdV1eTimKm+EkxfIuJwcvSnvELfWpV5ZKSy6DXrE84lZ 1u/s0smDXADBeIK3E7Dcsg8HEWh5iLCuYnSHNxuyZjjPoJDBuu8XdSpZlR+oakms8Je7zJ5B20Ypn f3xhmRybzVw/Ha2e3IcXqaFB3bB5XF020cMKppFA8Vmsema2As/5cgHI7yTNQcwdAVAXIsJxTSUkt 7TSkcIfQ==; Received: from h-4-70-69.a785.priv.bahnhof.se ([155.4.70.69]:54624 helo=localhost) by ted.gofardesign.uk with esmtpsa (TLS1.2) tls TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (Exim 4.93) (envelope-from ) id 1jUyqb-000PkM-7F; Sat, 02 May 2020 16:34:53 -0400 From: Stefan Kangas To: Lars Ingebrigtsen Subject: Re: bug#40909: eww: Add max width option similar to Man-width-max In-Reply-To: <87wo5wzl9i.fsf@gnus.org> (Lars Ingebrigtsen's message of "Fri, 01 May 2020 00:00:57 +0200") References: <874kt14nil.fsf@gnus.org> <87ees578mo.fsf@stefankangas.se> <87wo5wzl9i.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/28.0.50 (gnu/linux) Date: Sat, 02 May 2020 22:34:51 +0200 Message-ID: <877dxu3wk4.fsf@stefankangas.se> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - ted.gofardesign.uk X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - debbugs.gnu.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - marxist.se X-Get-Message-Sender-Via: ted.gofardesign.uk: authenticated_id: stefan@marxist.se X-Authenticated-Sender: ted.gofardesign.uk: stefan@marxist.se X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 40909 Cc: 40909@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) Lars Ingebrigtsen writes: >>> I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean. I mean... why? That'll leave a lot of > unused screen real estate for most things Emacs displays. When I start Emacs it's just one full screen frame and one window. But I generally use 2-3 windows vertically when working. FWIW, I asked on the #emacs IRC channel and at least some people reported they usually do something similar. > But, yes, rendering web pages very wide is usually not good for > readability, but... if a person has decided to have full-width frames, > doesn't that also mean that that person likes to have really long lines? Not in my use, at least, it doesn't mean that. I configure everything to be 80 columns wide, if at all possible. Long lines are very annoying, arguably probably even more so in my use-case than in others. Yeah, that's the usage pattern I'd expect -- you have a window that is the width you're most comfortable with, and then shr renders using that width, surely? If shr uses a width wider than the window in this scenario, that's a bug in shr. The problem with defaulting shr-width to anything in particular is that the rendering will be wonky if you then have a window that's narrower than that. I think introducing a new variable, shr-max-width, might perhaps be nice? That is, no matter how wide a window you have, nobody probably wants to read HTML formatted wider than that. -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue May 05 06:09:09 2020 Received: (at 40909) by debbugs.gnu.org; 5 May 2020 10:09:09 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:34759 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jVuVg-0007SV-TO for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 05 May 2020 06:09:09 -0400 Received: from ted.gofardesign.uk ([67.225.143.91]:52972) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jVuVe-0007S0-CM for 40909@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 05 May 2020 06:09:07 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=marxist.se; s=default; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:Date:References: In-Reply-To:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=NyP/j87rs73pldq0laorGQoWF4tOTGmIKriqA+DzAH0=; b=ZomJKf1GALazR5WPTmedmAAl7t s5b19N/veq7ZaJ0hdl0WA1nCAsl7Tvr+sT8uBVkbMuVTZ8GoNaakajrotX1Y3vxcHWs7KRq9knkgr tfPqRdwolJxV2xmYV6kuEbxRSFczhHYhiAY7eh+V8k8ZjIS/HPDfE4+L+DO6iH6P38LE9oWe3xn1N EUYNVv7EtyKJ0BDBWoh0WaF0UzkeSRFYi2oBFVRTjqjD9Rx3FxB5bE5YHyT4S+QDYoLIIfGxemZmq JnaWn07IxXa1ZgXIUMj+WfVseCgV/NQUX9bnJ3C7jRzqwgR/gRWukXQT57G8S152VnHC1CUQo9yQK 1XETnZBQ==; Received: from h-4-70-69.a785.priv.bahnhof.se ([155.4.70.69]:49466 helo=localhost) by ted.gofardesign.uk with esmtpsa (TLS1.2) tls TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (Exim 4.93) (envelope-from ) id 1jVuVY-0001q8-If; Tue, 05 May 2020 06:09:00 -0400 From: Stefan Kangas To: Lars Ingebrigtsen Subject: Re: bug#40909: eww: Add max width option similar to Man-width-max In-Reply-To: <875zdax25q.fsf@gnus.org> References: <874kt14nil.fsf@gnus.org> <87ees578mo.fsf@stefankangas.se> <87wo5wzl9i.fsf@gnus.org> <877dxu3wk4.fsf@stefankangas.se> <875zdax25q.fsf@gnus.org> Date: Tue, 05 May 2020 12:08:58 +0200 Message-ID: <87k11qzoat.fsf@stefankangas.se> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - ted.gofardesign.uk X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - debbugs.gnu.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - marxist.se X-Get-Message-Sender-Via: ted.gofardesign.uk: authenticated_id: stefan@marxist.se X-Authenticated-Sender: ted.gofardesign.uk: stefan@marxist.se X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 40909 Cc: 40909@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) Lars Ingebrigtsen writes: > I think introducing a new variable, shr-max-width, might perhaps be > nice?
