I've now added a function dns-query-asynchronous to dns.el to have an
asynchronous implementation that works across all Emacs builds.

However, I'm not pushing it yet until somebody makes a decision as to
whether the Emacs git repo is to be recovered from backup, or we just
carry on as before after the mis-merge into emacs-27 a few hours ago...
