The problem was that the 'gdm' user id number (or group id number) was not the same in generations n and n+2, which prevented GDM from accessing the '/var/lib/gdm' directory. Changing the permissions with "chown -R gdm.gdm /var/lib/gdm" or deleting '/var/lib/gdm' to force the creation of a new one with correct permissions allowed GDM to work correctly again. --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEARYKAB0WIQQkUwKxurH4Z/3KlryPP4Yfgut6mgUCXpgKAgAKCRCPP4Yfgut6 mtmBAP95hrxX5hbG//wwQf2dLSWVj+ax1Rq9QwdvFma092G+YgEA/OZFytx8EOuu d4W26EVGRE7MSxJdcCZN75k/4bN2BQw= =3inm -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Thu Apr 16 04:44:00 2020 Received: (at 40652) by debbugs.gnu.org; 16 Apr 2020 08:44:00 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:37513 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jP07r-00037A-Pt for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 16 Apr 2020 04:43:59 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([209.51.188.92]:60107) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jP07p-00036p-M3 for 40652@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 16 Apr 2020 04:43:58 -0400 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([2001:470:142:3::e]:55933) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1jP07k-0004Cz-BN; Thu, 16 Apr 2020 04:43:52 -0400 Received: from [2a01:e0a:1d:7270:af76:b9b:ca24:c465] (port=40078 helo=ribbon) by fencepost.gnu.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.2:RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:256) (Exim 4.82) (envelope-from ) id 1jP07j-0008BA-Lc; Thu, 16 Apr 2020 04:43:52 -0400 From: =?utf-8?Q?Ludovic_Court=C3=A8s?= To: Guillaume Le Vaillant Subject: Re: bug#40652: #36924 way solves the problem for me References: <20200416002020.GA381@tulip> <20200416053137.GA787@tulip> <87pnc7yjgd.fsf@yamatai> X-URL: http://www.fdn.fr/~lcourtes/ X-Revolutionary-Date: 28 Germinal an 228 de la =?utf-8?Q?R=C3=A9volution?= X-PGP-Key-ID: 0x090B11993D9AEBB5 X-PGP-Key: http://www.fdn.fr/~lcourtes/ludovic.asc X-PGP-Fingerprint: 3CE4 6455 8A84 FDC6 9DB4 0CFB 090B 1199 3D9A EBB5 X-OS: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Date: Thu, 16 Apr 2020 10:43:50 +0200 In-Reply-To: <87pnc7yjgd.fsf@yamatai> (Guillaume Le Vaillant's message of "Thu, 16 Apr 2020 09:32:18 +0200") Message-ID: <877dyfkegp.fsf@gnu.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/26.3 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-detected-operating-system: by eggs.gnu.org: GNU/Linux 2.2.x-3.x [generic] X-Spam-Score: -1.5 (-) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 40652 Cc: 40652@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -2.5 (--) Hi Guillaume, Guillaume Le Vaillant skribis: > I don't know if it's related, but recently I had GDM crashes at boot > after reconfiguring a system using gdm-service-type (generation n) to > make it use slim-service-type instead (generation n+1), and then > reconfiguring to gdm-service-type again (generation n+2). > > The problem was that the 'gdm' user id number (or group id number) was > not the same in generations n and n+2, which prevented GDM from > accessing the '/var/lib/gdm' directory. For user accounts (in '/home'), I guess it could be slightly annoying if a user wants to set a specific group id to some of their files and if it gets set back to the 'users' group at each system reconfiguration. However it's probably not a very common use case, and if we only change the files' uid, they could end up with an invalid gid anyway. --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEARYKAB0WIQQkUwKxurH4Z/3KlryPP4Yfgut6mgUCXplxqAAKCRCPP4Yfgut6 mhOVAPwM1/J6kBrTMoAlBEPRZlCAhLbUzOF4MsDJ0YyEgkzb7gD9FaF5S2dHHRvc zu1CQOoGNn5yUp2L7RDt9NiyvMIVrwQ= =UVAQ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat Apr 18 12:40:27 2020 Received: (at 40652) by debbugs.gnu.org; 18 Apr 2020 16:40:27 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:43492 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jPqW3-0005rk-AK for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 18 Apr 2020 12:40:27 -0400 Received: from eggs.gnu.org ([209.51.188.92]:37263) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jPqW0-0005rV-Na for 40652@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 18 Apr 2020 12:40:25 -0400 Received: from fencepost.gnu.org ([2001:470:142:3::e]:60970) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.71) (envelope-from ) id 1jPqVv-0000go-HT; Sat, 18 Apr 2020 12:40:19 -0400 Received: from [2a01:e0a:1d:7270:af76:b9b:ca24:c465] (port=55286 helo=ribbon) by fencepost.gnu.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.2:RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:256) (Exim 4.82) (envelope-from ) id 1jPqVv-0004yD-1w; Sat, 18 Apr 2020 12:40:19 -0400 From: =?utf-8?Q?Ludovic_Court=C3=A8s?= To: Guillaume Le Vaillant Subject: Re: bug#40652: #36924 way solves the problem for me References: <20200416002020.GA381@tulip> <20200416053137.GA787@tulip> <87pnc7yjgd.fsf@yamatai> <877dyfkegp.fsf@gnu.org> <87o8rryfih.fsf@yamatai> <87mu7bye95.fsf@yamatai> <87eesnf8jd.fsf@gnu.org> <87y2qucwgn.fsf@yamatai> X-URL: http://www.fdn.fr/~lcourtes/ X-Revolutionary-Date: 30 Germinal an 228 de la =?utf-8?Q?R=C3=A9volution?= X-PGP-Key-ID: 0x090B11993D9AEBB5 X-PGP-Key: http://www.fdn.fr/~lcourtes/ludovic.asc X-PGP-Fingerprint: 3CE4 6455 8A84 FDC6 9DB4 0CFB 090B 1199 3D9A EBB5 X-OS: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2020 18:40:17 +0200 In-Reply-To: <87y2qucwgn.fsf@yamatai> (Guillaume Le Vaillant's message of "Fri, 17 Apr 2020 11:06:48 +0200") Message-ID: <87wo6c7nny.fsf@gnu.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/26.3 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-detected-operating-system: by eggs.gnu.org: GNU/Linux 2.2.x-3.x [generic] X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 40652 Cc: 40652@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.7 (-) Hi, Guillaume Le Vaillant skribis: > Ludovic Court=C3=A8s skribis: > >> =E2=80=98%gdm-activation=E2=80=99 would throw an exception if the =E2=80= =9Cgdm=E2=80=9D user didn=E2=80=99t >> exist, so apparently it=E2=80=99s run before the activation snippet of >> =E2=80=98account-service-type=E2=80=99 (the ordering guarantee is not ex= plicit.) >> >> Hmm I wonder what I=E2=80=99m missing then. Right. The recursive chown would only happen if the home directory itself has the wrong UID though, so that would still let you fiddle with ownership of the files within it. Worth trying!
