Grepping our own sources for "~/" might be a good starting point.

We don't need to, but it would be nice if that was supported from the
get-go (assuming it's needed).

I think you will find that opinions differ on what is "best effort" in
this context. Which is completely fine, we don't need to agree on
such issues.
