There is no sure way to reproduce the crash, but it usually appears after a few hours of using lsp-mode and usually when scrolling the buffer. I haven't been able to reproduce this from emacs -Q because it requires several hours of heavy use to appear, and I can't get much done with -Q. This crash never happened with Emacs 26.1. Possible related: gc-cons-threshold is set to 16MB (ddskk is very slow with the default value). gdb stack trace looks like stack was exhausted (sorry, no bt full/xbacktrace, I'll try to get those on Stack overflow usually causes SIGSEGV. Can you please show the full crash message, including the "program received signal SIGABRT" part? Also, this is an optimized build, so the backtrace is not really reliable. Can you build Emacs without optimizations and show a backtrace from there (assuming it still crashes in the same manner when built that way)? Thanks. Maybe once in a few days now, previously once in a few hours. There's no warning for an approaching crash: emacs will be running just fine with no lag or anything until it suddenly dies, essentially always on a mouse event (either setting point, wheel scroll or clicking on a tab-line-mode tab). I also restored gc-cons-threshold to the default value, but that didn't seem to have much effect. I guess I'll try disabling as many packages as possible and see if something helps. -Valtteri From unknown Thu Sep 11 14:10:05 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#40225: 27.0.90; abort with apparent stack explosion in lsp-mode Resent-From: Valtteri Vuorikoski Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Fri, 15 May 2020 07:30:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 40225 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: 40225@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 40225-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B40225.158952774630274 (code B ref 40225); Fri, 15 May 2020 07:30:02 +0000 Received: (at 40225) by debbugs.gnu.org; 15 May 2020 07:29:06 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:35764 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jZUmI-0007sE-2D for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 15 May 2020 03:29:06 -0400 Received: from mail.netcrew.fi ([85.188.1.62]:49990) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1jZUmF-0007rv-3k for 40225@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 15 May 2020 03:29:04 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=notcom.org; s=nc2; h=Content-Transfer-Encoding:Content-Type:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version: Date:Message-ID:From:References:To:Subject:Sender:Reply-To:Cc:Content-ID: Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender:Resent-To:Resent-Cc :Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe:List-Subscribe: List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=e56Dzv2Ir7c7KnRo0lBLlwoOcK7Jom5Nf+/cnWnyGNc=; b=RsRq93IOnZBUqZ3cAnG/Z69YnC ti1j99ghyzNA/uC1EWu37jh4aD+i0xKu96Pr3WUVkLzWVOmn+HwRHV/d1R3mwU7shOJR+COc10I/K 23KbUX6mrioLHxVdL647EXmH1tqhZqLFLLJbCR5cjVpk08MrfeT2jwA9h0nlSXZeHGRY=; Received: from dsl-hkibng31-54faf6-86.dhcp.inet.fi ([84.250.246.86] helo=[10.0.42.10]) by mail.netcrew.fi with esmtpsa (TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_128_GCM_SHA256:128) (Exim 4.89) (envelope-from ) id 1jZUmE-0004ph-Gw for 40225@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 15 May 2020 10:29:02 +0300 References: <87mu844jm0.fsf@notcom.org> <83mu849zjc.fsf@gnu.org> <835zer9cj9.fsf@gnu.org> <8600e733-d75a-3d8f-897d-2eb3ca6bb59d@notcom.org> <83h7y41pxb.fsf@gnu.org> From: Valtteri Vuorikoski Message-ID: Date: Fri, 15 May 2020 10:28:58 +0300 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.8.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <83h7y41pxb.fsf@gnu.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-Language: en-US Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) On 2020-03-31 18:53, Eli Zaretskii wrote: >> (gdb) bt full 3 >> #0 0x00005568e2e5dc1b in mark_object (arg=Python Exception > 'gdb.MemoryError'> Cannot access memory at address 0x7ffde9c2fff8: >> #1 0x00005568e2e5df9c in mark_object (arg=0x5568e6c1f003) at alloc.c:6629 >> ptr = 0x5568e6c1f000 >> obj = 0x5568e6c1f043 >> po = 0x5568e6c1f000 >> cdr_count = 0 > > This does look like stack overflow. I can't state the culprit with full certainty, but with ~75% probability it was a function (tab-line-tabs-buffer-list-function) which was getting called on every mouse event. Since this function was getting called a huge number of times, I memoized some parts of it with the memoize.el library. It generates a closure like this: https://github.com/skeeto/emacs-memoize/blob/master/memoize.el#L99 If a timeout is set, every time the lambda is called, the cleanup timer is reset. Crashes stopped after I removed the timeout from my memoized function. There were a few other tweaks and package updates around the same time, but as far as I can tell this was the only high-traffic function that changed. -Valtteri From unknown Thu Sep 11 14:10:05 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#40225: 27.0.90; abort with apparent stack explosion in lsp-mode Resent-From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2022 07:23:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 40225 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Valtteri Vuorikoski Cc: 40225@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 40225-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B40225.164447773029452 (code B ref 40225); Thu, 10 Feb 2022 07:23:02 +0000 Received: (at 40225) by debbugs.gnu.org; 10 Feb 2022 07:22:10 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:53583 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nI3mL-0007ey-NU for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 02:22:09 -0500 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:44734) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nI3mJ-0007ef-Vk for 40225@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 02:22:08 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:In-Reply-To:Date: References:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=ozQ4JCxzeXGx03KH0oxxpuPqBUZNmA1mCucmpP0e6Ig=; b=N6kkyPP2ULFG87ry3kyINPVC/U yLEn3DYgOeOPN61MIkYb0FXJvVrT/jIHpmQQAg9l0bPUKc/aFH/+D6Vl2v4RSL+H1sINs/zTlsxZY y7DGKln7ZHzt9/Thx25qfns51bFvro/0Bgk4og8P1AZhsklHWJP3xX8ZrxODd+nUyAtk=; Received: from [84.212.220.105] (helo=giant) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1nI3m9-0003r7-SG; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 08:22:00 +0100 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen References: <87mu844jm0.fsf@notcom.org> <83mu849zjc.fsf@gnu.org> <835zer9cj9.fsf@gnu.org> <8600e733-d75a-3d8f-897d-2eb3ca6bb59d@notcom.org> <83h7y41pxb.fsf@gnu.org> X-Now-Playing: Stina Nordenstam's _Parliament Square_: "Parliament Square (Album Version)" Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2022 08:21:57 +0100 In-Reply-To: (Valtteri Vuorikoski's message of "Fri, 15 May 2020 10:28:58 +0300") Message-ID: <871r0bdw4q.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/29.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. After simplifying my tab-line-tabs-buffer-list-function the issue went away and hasn't been seen since. So with regard to the subject of this issue I think it's fine to close this. Not having tab-line-mode call tab-line-tabs-buffer-list-function on pretty much every possible event might be a worthwhile improvement at some point though (I haven't checked whether things improved in Emacs 28). -Valtteri From unknown Thu Sep 11 14:10:05 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#40225: 27.0.90; abort with apparent stack explosion in lsp-mode Resent-From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2022 11:37:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 40225 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: moreinfo To: Valtteri Vuorikoski Cc: 40225@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 40225-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B40225.164449299024384 (code B ref 40225); Thu, 10 Feb 2022 11:37:01 +0000 Received: (at 40225) by debbugs.gnu.org; 10 Feb 2022 11:36:30 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:54155 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nI7kU-0006LD-8O for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 06:36:30 -0500 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:47646) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nI7kR-0006Ks-R8 for 40225@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 06:36:28 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:In-Reply-To:Date: References:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=4uLONIxxI41T35zHgzek7JLCRQSAKtrabUijz4IYKp8=; b=Cg5pNMr4lCbOXFCTSzr/EbQUbn mixB6RJ7kMIHiA1b8/ZlGRNWtCnchLUC+5USTuDvss47xPiPh5KNDa6CmgQ3b3/Zchw++LOWvXhLc lCyANYP7CdEdVbdED3LQiRSq3f1j9wkrcJm3XJ1+F2mTVwXXSddMK03R7VwYizXi1Kxs=; Received: from [84.212.220.105] (helo=giant) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1nI7kH-00064W-FN; Thu, 10 Feb 2022 12:36:20 +0100 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen References: <87mu844jm0.fsf@notcom.org> <83mu849zjc.fsf@gnu.org> <835zer9cj9.fsf@gnu.org> <8600e733-d75a-3d8f-897d-2eb3ca6bb59d@notcom.org> <83h7y41pxb.fsf@gnu.org> <871r0bdw4q.fsf@gnus.org> <20220210090948.5nnlwnsa2qmmjmmy@donburi.himad.notcom.org> Face: iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAADAAAAAwBAMAAAClLOS0AAAABGdBTUEAALGPC/xhBQAAACBj SFJNAAB6JgAAgIQAAPoAAACA6AAAdTAAAOpgAAA6mAAAF3CculE8AAAAG1BMVEVHJR9AKixHJBtm gJus3PWsrq2/YCvjn2L///8rhcJvAAAAAWJLR0QIht6VegAAAAd0SU1FB+YCCgsRATE/HVwAAAGX SURBVDjLdZRdbsMgDIBptAs0ygEI1d63LNrzopjxOk3QHmCFXCBprj+DIdA/S+0Dn2x/GAhjD2O3 Z+JhcPYEIBHtR4p9Xmc7JnrY4o1XrKo4q3ybFsDEgJGWKFoYXYweOlqLGTKBcwBYimgPCfzBUGyl auAzERjKfTRwdG5aQneZzN8Z4wf4ds5Is7lpbczYErDKZ+HP2aM5zc4NCLyWNUZarWCFWSkltfnF Hl5r1lJqrWfQYH21uYvAmJM5LiiwGLssk5yZB6glc+8QQxj7AdRmBGRbswimFePip1Wn/SFArZXi ck5jDEBoORFwFr4K4LVihgVsyzeAWrHWCiMvSr1moGVRCqelNgB1kZG11jlreWt/uiS2wE8B6HQD CVoZNFAjudHyE3jxxz5FUPYIpzvdaHnQepB8u6JUuI3Tja8IWjKuo2/SIgBph0vU2tHDaeB0N0Yh nkzrHnQZPBwj3W4tc/ehAFda0VckrbgTl7QIHEDmJ4pvfAPlox64yBn4GUgZeD95Aa6/IyVgVfjH N16JJxm0/g/Ah/XmIQnAfgAAACV0RVh0ZGF0ZTpjcmVhdGUAMjAyMi0wMi0xMFQxMToxNzowMSsw MDowMBRilT4AAAAldEVYdGRhdGU6bW9kaWZ5ADIwMjItMDItMTBUMTE6MTc6MDErMDA6MDBlPy2C AAAAAElFTkSuQmCC X-Now-Playing: Instant Life's _I turned my best friends into slaves_: "Dancecop" Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2022 12:36:16 +0100 In-Reply-To: <20220210090948.5nnlwnsa2qmmjmmy@donburi.himad.notcom.org> (Valtteri Vuorikoski's message of "Thu, 10 Feb 2022 11:09:48 +0200") Message-ID: <87k0e37y33.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/29.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. Pretty much every event can kill buffers, and the list of buffers displayed on the tab line should reflect the change of the buffer list. The existing optimization takes care only to not redraw the tab line on every event when the buffer list is unchanged. Sounds like the elegant solution here could be a hook that runs when buffers are created/killed/renamed. I wouldn't call it quite elegant but indeed this is a possible optimization by tracking changes in the buffer list via buffer-list-update-hook. Patches welcome from anyone who has problems with the current implementation.
