I think the porkrind nightly builds are the trunk, so  I checked out  
the source like this:
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous <at> cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/sources/emacs co -r  
EMACS_23_1_RC emacs

The configure and build went smoothly:
GNU Emacs 23.0.96.1 (i386-apple-darwin9.7.0, NS apple-appkit-949.46)  
of 2009-07-16 on osiris.local

The fonts are rendered correctly.  The change you made seems to have  
done the trick.  Thanks again.
