Btw, please take into account that what that change caused is that
Emacs now behaves like other applications in this regard.

I'm quite sure that at least some of the protests are caused by people
being accustomed to the previous display, and the stark difference
that the new display produces.  But if you are using other
applications, the new display should be very familiar to you.
