(syntax SYNTAX)  Match a character with syntax SYNTAX, being one of:
  whitespace, punctuation, word, symbol, open-parenthesis,
  close-parenthesis, expression-prefix, string-quote,
  paired-delimiter, escape, character-quote, comment-start,
  comment-end, string-delimiter, comment-delimiter
