I tried this on Ubuntu, and it worked fine.

Where are we at with the Emacs 26 branch? Is it still hands-off?

It's open again as far as I know, but no further Emacs 26 releases are
planned, so I think patches should just go to Emacs 27 now, if I
understand correctly.
