Subject: 23.1.50; customising TeX-PDF-mode t makes Emacs.app fail to create AUCTeX 11.85 previews
Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 00:36:25 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hello!

The X client versions of GNU Emacs 23.0.x and 23.1.50 do not fail to
create a preview when my init file contains

	 '(TeX-PDF-mode t)

and they also do not fail when this line is commented. The Cocoa
variants of the same versions do all fail when this customisation is
set and they do not fail when it not set (commented). Ghostscript
8.61 always succeeds to run, and so do all the utilities used by AUCTeX.

The tests were run from auctex-11.85/preview/circ.tex. Systematically
the first eqnarray environment (line #67ff) was marked as a region to
be previewed. Caching the preamble was always off, except for a last
try (which also failed). TeX Live 2008 was last updated a few weeks
ago. PdfTeX is an updated version without the font cache bug (which
particularly became "famous" for Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard, users). A
similar report went to the AUCTeX developers.

Logs from the TeX runs to create the previews are recorded. This
failure exists over one year. Carbon Emacsen do not have this
failure. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger).

There's something the technicians need to learn from the artists. If
it isn't aesthetically pleasing, it's probably wrong.

Subject: 23.1.50; customising TeX-PDF-mode t makes Emacs.app fail to create AUCTeX 11.85 previews
Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 19:14:56 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hello!

The most easy way to reproduce the described behaviour is to launch
Emacs.app with -Q and then execute/evaluate in its *scratch* buffer a
bit of Elisp code:

<extend load-path that the AUCTeX files are found>
	  (load "auctex.el" nil t t)
	  (load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)
	 (setq TeX-PDF-mode t)

With the last line Emacs.app always fails to produce previews. The
setting can also be made active for a particular buffer by executing
the TeX-PDF-mode function. The interesting thing is that, when TeX-
PDF-mode is nil in the buffer you can create a preview, when you set
it to t you can't, when you set it to nil again, yes, you can again!

If this is still an issue with current Emacs, AUCTeX, and non-ancient OS
X, please open a new report. Thanks.
