In article you wrote: > (is that a late April Fools' Day prank?) > after each restart, a *Compile-log* buffer reports > Compiling no file at This means that it was "compiling" an Emacs lisp form, and that rather than being part of a source file, it was either an already evaluated form, or was an Emacs-Lisp-Mode buffer. I.e. it wasn't from a file ("no file"). Maybe expressing the situation this way ("Compiling no file") is not helpful. By contrast, if you compiled a file with M-x byte-compile-file, the message would say "Compiling bar/foo.el". What is it that you're not happy with? Is it the unhelpful message, or the fact the the *Compile-log* buffer appears at all? Could you please tell us whether your .emacs (or other initialisation file) performs byte compilation, and if so, what commands it does this with. I put some enhancements into the byte compiler's warning handler very recently, and suspect that has triggered some existing problem, and that is what you are seeing. Having grepped Emacs's source, it seems like the byte compiler is the only bit that writes "Compiling no file at ..." to the buffer *Compile-Log*. There are quite a few Emacs functions which call the byte compiler, even though they are not byte compilations themselves. Would you be prepared to help us with a bit of debugging? What would be useful is for you to "bisect" your .emacs file. That is, comment out the second half of it (more or less), start Emacs and note whether the silly warning happens. If it does, comment out the last three quarters (more or less) of .emacs, if it doesn't, comment out the first quarter. And so on. This should quickly home in on the form in your .emacs which is triggering the bug in Emacs. Please tell us what this form is. It would help greatly in solving the problem @Colin: any chance you could do the same, please. > Regards M By the way, would you please leave in the mailing list address as a Cc:, so that everybody can see what's happening. The problem with "Compiling no file at ..." is one I can't even reproduce at the moment. The patch you recently posted for package.el is something to do with package.el being compiled or not being compiled. Sorry, I had to leave and only wanted people to wait with bisecting until Stefan resolved the current issue. Beware also that I haven't followed the threads with the issue discussed here so maybe I'm not aware of all details. IIUC all started with Markus reporting that > (is that a late April Fools' Day prank?) > after each restart, a *Compile-log* buffer reports > Compiling no file at and one of the next days Angelo reported > Compiling no file at Thu Dec 6 09:46:33 2018 From Angelo's init file I traced that message back to the presence of (require 'package) and removing that removed the message. Then I looked into package.el and found that code at its end: (insert " ;; Local\sVariables: ;; version-control: never ;;\sno-byte-compile: t ;; no-update-autoloads: t ;; End: ")))) Since commenting out the ;;\sno-byte-compile: t line again avoids the message I concluded that Stefan somehow got the grep in makefile wrong which looks for grep '^;.*no-byte-compile: t' and apparently finds the one in that line. So the connection you asked for here > The patch you recently posted for package.el is something to do with > package.el being compiled or not being compiled. What connection does > this have with the irritating appearance of the message in *Compile-Log*? should be hopefully clear now. My patch is just a workaround (which happens to work here) for people to test. A clean fix could use 'concat' to produce that string (I have no idea whether no-update-autoloads might be affected as well) like (insert (concat " \n" ";; Local Variables:\n" ";; version-control: never\n" ";; no-byte-compile: t\n" ";; no-update-autoloads: t\n" ";; End:\n")) so the ^;.* match is avoided by the spaces and the quotation mark. martin From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Fri Dec 07 13:16:10 2018 Received: (at 33602) by debbugs.gnu.org; 7 Dec 2018 18:16:10 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:37301 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1gVKfY-0003bD-Gk for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 07 Dec 2018 13:16:09 -0500 Received: from colin.muc.de ([193.149.48.1]:10208 helo=mail.muc.de) by debbugs.gnu.org with smtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1gVKfW-0003b5-JB for 33602@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 07 Dec 2018 13:16:07 -0500 Received: (qmail 17288 invoked by uid 3782); 7 Dec 2018 18:16:05 -0000 Received: from acm.muc.de (p2E5D5936.dip0.t-ipconnect.de [46.93.89.54]) by colin.muc.de (tmda-ofmipd) with ESMTP; Fri, 07 Dec 2018 19:16:03 +0100 Received: (qmail 27497 invoked by uid 1000); 7 Dec 2018 18:11:12 -0000 Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2018 18:11:12 +0000 To: martin rudalics Subject: Re: bug#33602: 27.0.50; Compiling no file at Message-ID: <20181207181112.GE7949@ACM> References: <20181206133327.70786.qmail@mail.muc.de> <20181206215832.GA23102@INDRA> <20181207134327.GA7949@ACM> <5C0A7B00.5030106@gmx.at> <20181207145947.GB7949@ACM> <5C0AB2C2.8030600@gmx.at> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <5C0AB2C2.8030600@gmx.at> User-Agent: Mutt/1.10.1 (2018-07-13) X-Delivery-Agent: TMDA/1.1.12 (Macallan) From: Alan Mackenzie X-Primary-Address: acm@muc.de X-Spam-Score: -0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 33602 Cc: Colin Baxter , "markusffm@fn.de" , 33602@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) Hello, Martin. I just don't see how a mix up in the Local Variables section(s) can cause the appearance of *Compile-Log* with its irritating message. I can't reproduce the problem, either. What is the causal connection between the Local Variables: mixup and the appearnace of the *Compile-Log* buffer? > My patch is just a workaround (which happens to work here) for people > to test. It calls it on a generated lambda form. Do we still need to do this nowadays? I thought the byte compiler had been enhanced to detect and compile such forms automatically. -- Alan Mackenzie (Nuremberg, Germany. I'd ask a different question altogether: now that we know this comes from loading generics, why is that entry in compilation log a problem? Who cares what the byte compiler says as part of its normal operation, and why should we consider that "a bug"?
