(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately weren't resolved
at the time.)
Trying this in Emacs 29, I get a different font on the second char:
[Message part 2 (image/png, inline)]
[Message part 3 (text/plain, inline)]
But I'm not sure I understand this bug report fully. Are you still
seeing this problem in recent Emacs versions?
