Merely moving the cursor has become sluggish here, without even scrolling. Racing down the screen at the left margin, Emacs often doesn't even keep up with keyboard repeat; it keeps going a few lines after C-n has been released.

The occasional screen blanking was annoying, but somehow this feels even less satisfactory --- I'm running with the merge reverted for now.
