This is a follow up to
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2018-09/msg00831.html.
The crash can be invoked by doing the following:

  emacs -q -nw --daemon
  sudo chown differentuser:differentgroup $(tty)
  emacsclient -t . # error because the tty cannot be opened
  emacsclient -t . # SIGSEGV is received and Emacs crashes
