Works fine for me on RHEL 7.5 with Emacs 25.2 and 26.1.
Tested with:

emacs -Q etc/ses-example.ses

> /home/dalyw/lisp/ses hides /usr/local/share/emacs/26.1/lisp/ses

Perhaps this is your problem. Did you try with "emacs -Q"?
