I just found out because I wanted to add support for binary prefixes since I did not know they are already supported. It's a hidden, but valuable feature, since I think, that M is binary is hard to remember and can easily lead to confusion. Much clearer is to use MiB. "M" is mentioned only for backwards compatibility in this patch. The parsing for binary prefixes is done in gnulib/lib/xstrtol.c so this is not dd specific. --------------F96FD26E1C014FDF3535F9EA Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="dd-inform-about-binary-prefixes-in-helptext.patch" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="dd-inform-about-binary-prefixes-in-helptext.patch" >From e3eaf3024a7b876e308883361cc7b3701a467805 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: wodry Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2018 19:45:07 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] Inform about binary prefixes in helptext --- src/dd.c | 5 +++-- 1 file changed, 3 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/dd.c b/src/dd.c index 70bbbb19e..57cb34b03 100644 --- a/src/dd.c +++ b/src/dd.c @@ -592,8 +592,9 @@ Copy a file, converting and formatting according to the operands.\n\ fputs (_("\ \n\ N and BYTES may be followed by the following multiplicative suffixes:\n\ -c =1, w =2, b =512, kB =1000, K =1024, MB =1000*1000, M =1024*1024, xM =M,\n\ -GB =1000*1000*1000, G =1024*1024*1024, and so on for T, P, E, Z, Y.\n\ +c =1, w =2, b =512, kB =1000, KiB =1024, K=KiB,\n\ +MB =1000*1000, MiB =1024*1024, M =MiB, xM =MiB,\n\ +GB =1000*1000*1000, GiB =1024*1024*1024, G =GiB, and so on for T, P, E, Z, Y.\n\ \n\ Each CONV symbol may be:\n\ \n\ -- 2.11.0 --------------F96FD26E1C014FDF3535F9EA-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat Jul 21 15:43:18 2018 Received: (at 32242) by debbugs.gnu.org; 21 Jul 2018 19:43:18 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:51369 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1fgxmg-0005tV-2Z for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 15:43:18 -0400 Received: from mail.magicbluesmoke.com ([82.195.144.49]:51818) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1fgxme-0005tL-9E for 32242@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 15:43:16 -0400 Received: from localhost.localdomain (unknown [76.21.115.186]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mail.magicbluesmoke.com (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 6463E9A9E; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 20:43:14 +0100 (IST) Subject: Re: bug#32242: dd help text lacks information about binary prefixes To: Wodry , 32242@debbugs.gnu.org References: From: =?UTF-8?Q?P=c3=a1draig_Brady?= Message-ID: <472e887a-9abc-de0b-a5e8-e86bcfeec819@draigBrady.com> Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2018 12:43:12 -0700 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/45.8.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 32242 X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) On 21/07/18 11:48, Wodry wrote: > One can use binary prefixes (iB, e.g. MiB) with dd command, but that is > not written in the help text. > > I just found out because I wanted to add support for binary prefixes > since I did not know they are already supported. > > It's a hidden, but valuable feature, since I think, that M is binary is > hard to remember and can easily lead to confusion. > > Much clearer is to use MiB. If you prepared a single patch to cover all, that would be great. Note also there is a shared note in coreutils.texi that reads: SIZE may be, or may be an integer optionally followed by, one of the following multiplicative suffixes: ‘KB’ => 1000 (KiloBytes) ‘K’ => 1024 (KibiBytes) ‘MB’ => 1000*1000 (MegaBytes) ‘M’ => 1024*1024 (MebiBytes) ‘GB’ => 1000*1000*1000 (GigaBytes) ‘G’ => 1024*1024*1024 (GibiBytes) and so on for ‘T’, ‘P’, ‘E’, ‘Z’, and ‘Y’. There are individual notes on the options in the df man page etc. This needs to be carefully considered. Perhaps an additional note in the info docs is best for now? cheers, Pádraig From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Jul 22 09:57:44 2018 Received: (at 32242) by debbugs.gnu.org; 22 Jul 2018 13:57:44 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:52462 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1fhEro-0008Ti-9U for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 22 Jul 2018 09:57:44 -0400 Received: from aibo.runbox.com ([91.220.196.211]:36634) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1fhErm-0008TZ-26 for 32242@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 22 Jul 2018 09:57:43 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=runbox.com; s=rbselector1; h=Content-Type:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version:Date:Message-ID:From: References:To:Subject; bh=zR/PqE6VTty/P7AE1yjt4Ku6l2oJbmcsGPNC70blgog=; b=DL7 YpVfvYLpV9NKTMGpAm33ZPNQAYxFT41bkVLrQkFQM7dXCoV8reIKJGCn0mSdlXymXVm0yVQuN/ChL b34AqWCdhDDscBSpTkYfVm06+u0zq3H1bwxOyFDDt6e2OPH4VSK52+9eq3djH/ogIyNFJgIIb2IBJ BNasdne6brDs03XEcYCs+jtvONop7wu9G5HGNx1xwUTj29fEqekIheHpH5aywIUhL1P1nTJnr9j+7 CMPLD5yqvEl5abpQjSR2CuUiFnOp4gnJliP8TwkNRB24PXB5G/SABJAOEUx4i575B0yevQO0htI7B 3+za5vk+ThmYcu1Iv9Lsj1Q2a3LwlTA==; Received: from [10.9.9.211] (helo=mailfront11.runbox.com) by mailtransmit02.runbox with esmtp (Exim 4.86_2) (envelope-from ) id 1fhErk-0004Bs-2S; Sun, 22 Jul 2018 15:57:40 +0200 Received: by mailfront11.runbox.com with esmtpsa (uid:795864 ) (TLS1.2:RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:256) (Exim 4.82) id 1fhEri-0003dA-EB; Sun, 22 Jul 2018 15:57:38 +0200 Subject: Re: bug#32242: dd help text lacks information about binary prefixes To: =?UTF-8?Q?P=c3=a1draig_Brady?= , 32242@debbugs.gnu.org References: <472e887a-9abc-de0b-a5e8-e86bcfeec819@draigBrady.com> <89b5d394-e9fe-1d27-ce3d-ba1302e2dbdd@runbox.com> From: Wodry Message-ID: <34298b8b-707c-40a7-e5e6-7bc8a555bdb2@runbox.com> Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2018 15:57:37 +0200 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/52.9.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------DE199F48A5A6C3D96DBCE3C7" Content-Language: de-DE X-Spam-Score: -0.4 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 32242 X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.4 (-) This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------DE199F48A5A6C3D96DBCE3C7 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Am 21.07.2018 um 23:04 schrieb Pádraig Brady: > On 21/07/18 13:36, Wodry wrote: >> Am 21.07.2018 um 21:43 schrieb Pádraig Brady: >>> We should update truncate(1) etc. to be consistent if making this change. > > If you prepared a single patch to cover all, that would be great. > Note also there is a shared note in coreutils.texi that reads: > > SIZE may be, or may be an integer optionally followed by, > one of the following multiplicative suffixes: > ‘KB’ => 1000 (KiloBytes) > ‘K’ => 1024 (KibiBytes) > ‘MB’ => 1000*1000 (MegaBytes) > ‘M’ => 1024*1024 (MebiBytes) > ‘GB’ => 1000*1000*1000 (GigaBytes) > ‘G’ => 1024*1024*1024 (GibiBytes) > and so on for ‘T’, ‘P’, ‘E’, ‘Z’, and ‘Y’. > > There are individual notes on the options in the df man page etc. > This needs to be carefully considered. > Perhaps an additional note in the info docs is best for now? > > cheers, > Pádraig > > I have considered all files that execute functions "xstrto*", excluding xstrtod and xstrtold. The fifth paramater ("valid_suffixes") of the xstrto* needs to contain a '0' to be able to process binary prefixes. I have considered all files that execute functions "xdectoint", which is a wrapper vor xstrtol. The fourth paramater ("suffixes") of this function needs to contain a '0' to be able to process binary prefixes. Here a matrix of my findings: The following files can process Binary Prefixes: file proof command helptext type ---- ------------- ------------- dd.c echo hi | dd bs=1MiB own df.c df --block-size=1MiB / emit_size_note du.c du --block-size=1MiB emit_size_note head.c : | head --lines=1KiB own ls.c ls --block-size=1MiB emit_size_note od.c od --read-bytes=1KiB myfile own split.c split --bytes=10KiB myfilec emit_size_note stdbuf.c echo hi | stdbuf --output=1KiB cat own tail.c : | tail --lines=1KiB own truncate.c truncate --size=1MiB myfile emit_size_note In the patch attached (You can see it "live" also on https://github.com/coreutils/coreutils/pull/15), I added a note to the files own helptext (if it has that and does not execute emit_size_note), and for the other commands only one time in the emit_size_note function. As You suggested, I also added a note to doc/coreutils.texi. I thought it would be clean, to have a simple change here, and only add the same note everywhere, without changing the text that is already there. The following files can not process Binary Prefixes: chgrp.c chroot.c csplit.c expr.c extent-scan.c install.c join.c md5sum.c mknod.c nice.c numfmt.c # uses two character binary prefixes like "Mi", #which is documneted in the man page. "MiB" is invalid pr.c ptx.c shuf.c shred.c sort.c stty.c tr.c uniq.c Hope You like the patch and I did not have overseen something. But it looks like this is the only file where this space occurs. LANG=en_EN.utf8 dd --help outputs N and BYTES may be followed by the following multiplicative suffixes: c =1, w =2, b =512, kB =1000, K =1024, MB =1000*1000, M =1024*1024, xM =M, But in the translation there is no space: LANG=de_DE.utf8 dd --help outputs N und BYTES können folgende multiplikative Endungen tragen: c=1, w=2, b=512, kB=1000, K=1024, MB=1000×1000, M=1024×1024, xM=M In the attached updated patch file I removed the space in the new addtional notes and in the dd help text.
