This sounds similar to the following bug: https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D26202 It has been known for a while that certain environment variables might cause problems like this if they are not configured "correctly" on a foreign distribution. What is "correct" depends on the distro, it seems. For more discussion about this kind of issue in general, you might be interested in the following threads: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-guix/2017-11/msg00031.html https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-guix/2017-05/msg00161.html By the way, I found those threads by searching for the bug number 26202 on the email list archives: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/cgi-bin/namazu.cgi?query=3D26202&submit=3DSea= rch%21&idxname=3Dhelp-guix&max=3D20&result=3Dnormal&sort=3Dscore The examples above were specific to Ubuntu and Trisquel (an Ubuntu derivative), I think. Perhaps you have discovered a new example of this kind of problem on Fedora. I wonder what Fedora is doing with GI_TYPELIB_PATH that causes this problem to occur for you? =2D-=20 Chris --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCAAdFiEEy/WXVcvn5+/vGD+x3UCaFdgiRp0FAlpapfwACgkQ3UCaFdgi Rp0RGRAAxAkHygHeQLfH4MrhH4elKI3tUJvDeo7uQIh+0M9h5cAWUQquMGGSoDFl 13jaXDZF8yxKNUyZ+CbCDlqHVxNXLJmpPUZR8ufiBA4wMm4WlcCsjQ+FULoCXQr7 mUdaQKxA94zg1m7BSQMuAtgNBNEai2CvkxvVL3VaQQKqBHIPWQ2zU4N6PUTOAdi+ VGxvL49oBwqV9YMUr5PI35VO9VDLVBHjNgjenNwVD9IBlWGA+/8QGbCkM47unv9m BGHbX1EoHHpLHexPHdf06i7SKUl7O4lCUIzqDEPnDylc0z7OB5NNaX8X00BHJVlb AI3WpupeBVm+29ZCtFROcsObCEwcAOfhc7/MAjteW1Q27exQS1IZ/m9y5xE6Qw02 5kjvLEbMhLCevLpThaSzPxmflwsNIupzlDxCyV0jpYBiPDyUbBbxIAiX5dY4MxD1 V9u/myiGit7/UqaWmP/r5gr1bscC57lyE5PTJQAicEiqxA+5pJgMuBUFHCcaKuRZ SoOUTVm+3bfLPAuszQhrC4KYqdprpITioeDxQ2MIbi3dMmMmpk2uUcKPDcf6oEY8 s8OHNN3BFh5emUJz/bN6N2Ow/vT9M61emGIcw52RZiKcNznZe5tKt8Ph2wXNG79C 2aNvftCKYW230iIZxB8liJZwUGAdthzCB2QVllj6H6YI9Es2hNw= =D/rW -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Jan 14 13:31:35 2018 Received: (at 30093) by debbugs.gnu.org; 14 Jan 2018 18:31:35 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:56293 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ean4B-0002DU-8i for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 13:31:35 -0500 Received: from mail-oln040092010027.outbound.protection.outlook.com ([40.92.10.27]:39568 helo=NAM04-CO1-obe.outbound.protection.outlook.com) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ean49-0002DH-G7 for 30093@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 13:31:34 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=hotmail.com; s=selector1; h=From:Date:Subject:Message-ID:Content-Type:MIME-Version; bh=8QMKpvjlFQhrChAI/1QB9bzsfbsC2ectta0bZVXtWFk=; b=AtcGwzXYY8qJIaCKQrqBAPo5Hz0y9fiLnkPE8f99EAA2wVjJZKRh/73b/pIhlEc60Mm9iU204W2G/G6ns2wpTmcv6Uht8MfXt25JLUl6Qyso1/E4Kmx99MQ+15yxI084yB8MKMBf1iv+s6CXDUEXNrauh6EnXpyhbPGqZJdhgDy3vQ3gh11NXIkQWdu/lXD4fCOIw/gT31eJGgKmBqeUrPat4lE6wIGrPzZLw1SInhPXyko0po5M53ifMG3QCdOvlCrRcRjNHwpjzQ1dPdH6OOmSMxZ14ymf7px99tW7lW7oJB5h0yWsQ/GGN9wFw6cuXP5DzsOyG4Rnjqlu7VyVBw== Received: from SN1NAM04FT053.eop-NAM04.prod.protection.outlook.com (10.152.88.58) by SN1NAM04HT243.eop-NAM04.prod.protection.outlook.com (10.152.89.18) with Microsoft SMTP Server (version=TLS1_2, cipher=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P384) id 15.20.345.12; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 18:31:27 +0000 Received: from MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com (10.152.88.59) by SN1NAM04FT053.mail.protection.outlook.com (10.152.88.241) with Microsoft SMTP Server (version=TLS1_2, cipher=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P256) id 15.20.345.12 via Frontend Transport; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 18:31:26 +0000 Received: from MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com ([10.172.101.142]) by MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com ([10.172.101.142]) with mapi id 15.20.0407.009; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 18:31:26 +0000 From: Fis Trivial To: Chris Marusich Subject: Re: bug#30093: Installing python-ipython breaks Gnome on Fedora. As you just pointed out, the classification doesn't really match reality, which limits its usefulness. >> This sounds similar to the following bug: >> >> https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D26202 >> > To mitigate the problem in above link, which is the problem introduced by > _type 1_ variables, maybe we can treat these environment variables differ= ently. > When guix is updating it to a new value due to change of profile, it shou= ld > explicitly append the original value to the upgraded definition (explicit= ly > means writing it down in expanded form, like "/home/fis/.bin", not $HOME/= .bin or > $VARIABLE_NAME). In the above bug, there is no way guix can define the > *XDG_DATA_DIRS* earlier than the distro. (You have to run the distro then > install guix, right?). It's not perfect, but it seems to work. It sounds like you're suggesting that when Guix builds the new profile, it should take into consideration current value of the user's environment variables when building the profile. This is not permissible in the purely functional software deployment model that Guix follows. The work-around suggested in Bug 26202 is a specific, "impure" work-around for a specific problem on a specific foreign distribution, which requires a user to modify their environment outside the scope of Guix's purely functional model. In general, for any given foreign distribution, there may be other problems that occur because the environment variables set by Guix are not formed or used in precisely the way that the foreign distribution expects. These problems may require changes that are, in general, impossible for Guix to predict or (if the solution requires changes that depend impurely on the environment) impossible for Guix to make without violating the purely functional model. I suspect that this class of problem won't be easy to fix generically from within Guix. Instead, I suspect it's more realistic to look for solutions on a case-by-case basis. For example, the work-around for Bug 26202 is currently a reasonable solution for that particular issue on that particular foreign distribution. Even if we might be able to solve a particular problem like that one by introducing impurities into the build, I'm not convinced it would fix this class of problems in general. In any case, I'm afraid that the fact that it would require us to introduce impurities into the build probably makes it a non-starter for the reasons I mentioned above. Of course, if there is a way to solve this class of problem more generally without introducing impurities, that'd be great. I just can't think of one at this time. =2D-=20 Chris --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCAAdFiEEy/WXVcvn5+/vGD+x3UCaFdgiRp0FAlpb2OwACgkQ3UCaFdgi Rp1ATBAAwAui9DKp4jXn8RUerVeQs5hedbLYXe/atup4fuoqqYfqwnXvHyUfuqEv uAOK/N80dk8V+H2qUQmsri6JxE4OnHaOh932KBLDY2Bx4DOX2oxfo9bDMXnxxmHy 7RpvxrI5p4xHprUxtnlKJ4vgkKRo846tqxllw2HnagARb03H1tWwCdNazK2CIQF9 1IePWIHFhmWIod1FwAQZZ4l1FRNJwD738NqsZfVysWL8Urg1wfbrtgRuGckuBfhz REE4NvdBCYeeONdvlDdjac+edzwMYedE/kHGNe5eKWv+O/TCf+BiBkHsr2C56lst mJBZZhAB9Jc9BVBK0KIthuq7ehbNLZi6//Hnm4Y0D0gh9AaNUx/jIXprFMjnjr/q hgu+zvFRghnUqxZVj6yJl63Mt7QJuDnjXKvn11aCCg+dtfdAM30vRp19L/PaCvHA KHl1lng5irjsBPZDXGxu6YG8gtpAuI0b4gvhC+tu9TReQ7IWofFByXg0+Tp/EqCg f9n1S8GTLq8xLrxvFTviwP19h1dTJPnPKL4lquLmzgfovAwQ2cVXZYNrqrXHykH/ uh4TzalrtGUk+IwjL3TkadyuNpG/wDn54dFcChYGjNkx+LtH2DuPKp9Y75nEsoGD kVgE+pMZcNH/uRMxkM9DQ7yBoE5pPIvAl5B09ZxSw8JeiLyTJgE= =4KLO -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Jan 14 19:45:16 2018 Received: (at 30093) by debbugs.gnu.org; 15 Jan 2018 00:45:16 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:56483 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eastn-00086A-TV for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 19:45:16 -0500 Received: from mail-pl0-f45.google.com ([209.85.160.45]:44344) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eastl-00085u-Ka for 30093@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 19:45:14 -0500 Received: by mail-pl0-f45.google.com with SMTP id f8so480880plk.11 for <30093@debbugs.gnu.org>; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 16:45:13 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=from:to:cc:subject:references:date:in-reply-to:message-id :user-agent:mime-version; bh=9PTDe1FMXwzfTkoEId532VfyeiCOsM9DBYCs/EpXnVI=; b=i4aQZ2bfpFuCZSNWJ1c503+/rcVGM1YoDMdSe8dXhp7ybxboW0++k8ALAzOsxzfL6j Z04PgeEnu/ZcBosKvReoxkySsVGf5fUCCpAmo5vB5foa0Iu+rxUt1SzeoXkBYmFM+u9H Fir+bbwoM4bpCvJI/NZqGDbKLR7Fc/r8uNYupANVcB6UeGCKxifKux2vGCPEKmyRh82f iyW7HLgMjcCztKJTIYHE2rtrnGWEiuqtseNOaN7mV34xJhnjEIdRmUUnWeKrhQDNUy5z rMbEc+3J2kiOFO/JlvVfTOlkMo+bYoNu0+GCqA+dmdXjoTCFOsvaxhsUpjovW/18S+dz 29ew== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:from:to:cc:subject:references:date:in-reply-to :message-id:user-agent:mime-version; bh=9PTDe1FMXwzfTkoEId532VfyeiCOsM9DBYCs/EpXnVI=; b=d6HctmKN5w7xig5N1ORSzaqqPq8WWoijBh71vkiUqBL4KG0VsxBFqk8nFkxXI3U9NE b50xa5d/FArP7Ump9FO72qt82ed43qGPuQDLw0zibuoypBquM5FyN8ahBmOqErIAgAc3 Tcc/MxARXbodbvlmmOj711Q5wa5E42o/pSFuSJJGqFJeiaLYhgKr45mnLOHP5jtFgtXj R5wUaf0dQulqP2VI9LC5505QJuDjB91N7duOeEp0nOhfUXdWp6JmrPnq+w6hpi3MN/o5 XFE/+PXgJlVupa1PW5IAqCRrRHV6Dl18QriRDDmdV9ff65tFyehTQSRhxQ48vt0kFknN jsQQ== X-Gm-Message-State: AKGB3mLWTpKMtGao5UxmXnS8+ZjvgBvHayf3U/qnROoGXjyydOHV1oMI IJVSLGziC6cvOzy/JwGp/wXYZA== X-Google-Smtp-Source: ACJfBovYgEs6ldbbrZcuhPRu9R3SQO3bsW2+NSC3nRw/2fBmcSh9SnNiLb8JYwyWp1fSAU7APQSWsg== X-Received: by 10.124.25.17 with SMTP id c17mr27307890plz.90.1515977107121; Sun, 14 Jan 2018 16:45:07 -0800 (PST) Received: from garuda.local (c-24-18-253-84.hsd1.wa.comcast.net. The specific examples I know of are: =2D When Guix downloads source files from the Internet and puts them into the store. =2D When Guix finds Guile modules in the GUILE_LOAD_PATH and puts them in the store, as a result of using 'with-imported-modules' with a G-Expression. =2D Other code that exists explicitly to add files to the store, such as the 'local-file' procedure. In these cases, what winds up in the store ultimately comes from the outside world. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that when something from "outside" is put into the store in this way, it's done outside the scope of a derivation, since derivations should only be able to access files that exist in the store. Anyway, this means that technically, we probably could come up with a solution that takes the current value of an environment variable and ultimately incorporates it into a build that creates the new profile generation. However, it doesn't change the fact that this class of problem will probably continue to occur on foreign distributions, so I still think it might be best to deal with the problems on a case by case basis. =20=20 =2D-=20 Chris --=-=-= Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCAAdFiEEy/WXVcvn5+/vGD+x3UCaFdgiRp0FAlpb+Y0ACgkQ3UCaFdgi Rp2zMRAAqtUktuf0qFunNaHkm7nu9USD0ggnjKmgcjFW/Fj1PBdkPT178tFBKDao jiRzzDhMLfxprSjwcHyyPRofqV30EI2lYHd50tq0A4pQhNjz0uv8tRJdghXWVvbM hA3rtlSZlY2GmRZBE4S4PCW15OtCysi5faBsX37+J9M4OU0DPYgKwPdCdkjmK1wd l8FLK3akhuLrji+YGtSbt54JuxwLynaHPXCiVxPuMtmIkZQQSHPWAobfbWQb9dMU L/Uu3C6pSuLfk+7ya1ngyIvYCwLdzh0CgirY//4qL587FZ49UUiqz60XdhLgXaps mm0z66tFipvkpfb774N/4WMbrLksjmsY0CWamdoUzKLFqjuXfFKOktGmH+xBvS19 8VGhAqtrPpCBE8r+EWkdRx60BMIytEwNUOz9D2JclJZgX3eJWepGmjTKSdJY/JWn HDFJ/xmY32DH+rz5Cosv4LGCXntBGKDp2Ou4EDB7TEL3VNC88Rl1UyXvWgkLqxXl sx4If62qBuRGXkZ/pd2NwZyfbzDrJLZjfIpmZfI3FxAwLdVGSbqsLI3sEAE7UsuG 9oQQpbFQ95XobQJIgsWj/TM2AqTbm7oletL61C78CjFLGUUGDuBl/x+7HYbXZNl4 Zd2EAe7p9lKYMNlgikSf3k9dAPcAEWLFSXoFuwkOz9+5yEVo22g= =k0Em -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-=-=-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Wed Jan 17 14:53:53 2018 Received: (at 30093) by debbugs.gnu.org; 17 Jan 2018 19:53:53 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:60600 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ebtmT-0003Rp-01 for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 17 Jan 2018 14:53:53 -0500 Received: from mail-oln040092006083.outbound.protection.outlook.com ([40.92.6.83]:37568 helo=NAM03-BY2-obe.outbound.protection.outlook.com) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ebtmR-0003Rc-OO for 30093@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 17 Jan 2018 14:53:52 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=hotmail.com; s=selector1; h=From:Date:Subject:Message-ID:Content-Type:MIME-Version; bh=oFVoQQoUzDVUJxQbycPsEl/V3Q6fWBUmKBOzII/j6KA=; b=Btrfbwvhox2z/bFj5iysOll2jguYr0G8HV4m9jVd7J/P2oD6saW0GW9pWleZBbtbrsZ5AMokXs0GnYS0z6i56rHz1kkOY49zhGhkuLNPoG2UslEsxnyRYS88QyeTDCwgsh91dMKWGRnjNyAWlSYp4+4jXD/UI7TbtE2KCVxpLvXJa0HCA/ZG0bWSWuhYxKknGnsftmOJv5g/w5q0b4IWGRZwXcbCpQWQrRw57/4sjdrnzrjXM1Ps7/4QtW/0XOoCJrbz4O5Lexy/h4bUQEAredVzOfU6oghlO/mrGoyk+8rMEZGIOXMIfnLuvoEIMlj/sqVLLjOUA9eyzle/siSxIw== Received: from BY2NAM03FT063.eop-NAM03.prod.protection.outlook.com (10.152.84.58) by BY2NAM03HT075.eop-NAM03.prod.protection.outlook.com (10.152.85.240) with Microsoft SMTP Server (version=TLS1_2, cipher=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P256) id 15.20.345.19; Wed, 17 Jan 2018 19:53:45 +0000 Received: from MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com (10.152.84.59) by BY2NAM03FT063.mail.protection.outlook.com (10.152.85.182) with Microsoft SMTP Server (version=TLS1_2, cipher=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P256) id 15.20.345.19 via Frontend Transport; Wed, 17 Jan 2018 19:53:44 +0000 Received: from MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com ([10.172.101.142]) by MWHPR16MB0063.namprd16.prod.outlook.com ([10.172.101.142]) with mapi id 15.20.0407.012; Wed, 17 Jan 2018 19:53:44 +0000 From: Fis Trivial To: Chris Marusich Subject: Re: bug#30093: Installing python-ipython breaks Gnome on Fedora. I think a bold, but definitive approach at fixing this problem would be to never use known environment variables in Guix search paths specifications. Instead, we should introduce custom Guix-specific flavors of the same variables, e.g. GUIX_GI_TYPELIB_PATH. That's more work (need to write and maintain patches that add those Guix-specific variables along their regular flavor), but that'd mean we can set all the variables we want not worrying about breaking a foreign distribution. Hello,

I see people mentioning here that = there doesn't seem to be a general solution to be included in Guix for = this, but I als do not understand what the particular solution (for my = machine, for example) is supposed to be.
I'm a new user to Guix an= d also not technically very experienced with Linux OS's, so feel free t= o point me out something obvious I have missed.

I currently = have Guix on top of Ubuntu 20.04, and I have this exact problem with XD= G=5FDATA=5FDIRS being exported on startup of Gnome and breaking it, and= i happend when this variable is added to ~/.guix-profile/etc/profile w= hen installing certain packages; the ones detected so far where python-= ipython, python-ipykernel and python-notebook.

As far as I u= nedrstand, when Ubuntu starts up, it runs /etc/profile, which in turn r= eads through all scripts inside /etc/profile.d. In that dir, we have gu= ix.sh, which I will paste here:

# =5FGUIX=5FPROFILE: = `guix pull` profile
=5FGUIX=5FPROFILE=3D"$HOME/.config/guix/curren= t"
export PATH=3D"$=5FGUIX=5FPROFILE/bin${PATH:+:}$PATH"
# Ex= port INFOPATH so that the updated info pages can be found
# and re= ad by both /usr/bin/info and/or $GUIX=5FPROFILE/bin/info
# When IN= FOPATH is unset, add a trailing colon so that Emacs
# searches 'In= fo-default-directory-list'.
export INFOPATH=3D"$=5FGUIX=5FPROFILE/= share/info:$INFOPATH"

# GUIX=5FPROFILE: User's default profi= le
GUIX=5FPROFILE=3D"$HOME/.guix-profile"
[ -L $GUIX=5FPROFIL= E ] || return
GUIX=5FLOCPATH=3D"$GUIX=5FPROFILE/lib/locale"
e= xport GUIX=5FPROFILE GUIX=5FLOCPATH

[ -f "$GUIX=5FPROFILE/et= c/profile" ] && . "$GUIX=5FPROFILE/etc/profile"

# se= t XDG=5FDATA=5FDIRS to include Guix installations
export XDG=5FDAT= A=5FDIRS=3D"$GUIX=5FPROFILE/share:${XDG=5FDATA=5FDIRS:-/usr/local/share= /:/usr/share/}"

The culprit in this case seems= to be [ -f "$GUIX=5FPROFILE/etc/profile" ] && . "$GUIX= =5FPROFILE/etc/profile", and this is because it is getting the= following two lines from $GUIX=5FPROFILE/etc/profile which are introdu= ced by installing python-ipython (for example):

expor= t GI=5FTYPELIB=5FPATH=3D"${GUIX=5FPROFILE:-/gnu/store/22lc31mr4h00x5swz= k73293pm2xpaahi-profile}/lib/girepository-1.0${GI=5FTYPELIB=5FPATH:+:}$= GI=5FTYPELIB=5FPATH"
export XDG=5FDATA=5FDIRS=3D"${GUIX=5FPROFILE:= -/gnu/store/22lc31mr4h00x5swzk73293pm2xpaahi-profile}/share${XDG=5FDATA= =5FDIRS:+:}$XDG=5FDATA=5FDIRS"

In fact, when t= his happens, the last line in guix.sh is only duplicating what the line= inside .guix-profile/etc/profile had already exported:

=

export XDG=5FDATA=5FDIRS=3D"$GUIX=5FPROFILE/share:${XDG=5FDATA=5FDIR= S:-/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/}"

What is the worka= round that can be used here?
I only see two possible solutions, wh= ich are unsatisfactory to me:

  1. Refrain from installing packag= es that alter this variable;
  2. Comment all lines inside guix.sh a= nd add . "$GUIX=5FPROFILE/etc/profile to my .bash=5Frc file, focing me = to open a terminal everytime I want to launch guix installed packages.<= /li>
Is there another alternative for this?

Eagerly awat= ing for feedback on this, as it's completely destroying my workflow; I = am never sure when  will install a package that wll break Ubuntu.<= br />
Thanks,

That's been fixed in guix-install.sh with 23aafc800c9e678662766440916449ec5bbce830 from Philip McGrath (thanks!): "etc/guix-install.sh: Initialize XDG base directories." I've confirmed it fixes the original problem, which was that installing 'python-ipython' would break a GDM login to GNOME on Fedora, by installing the latest Guix via guix-install.sh on a Fedora 33 VM I had laying around, then 'guix install python-ipython', logout, then re-login without an issue.
