Instead of running autoreconf, please run './bootstrap'.

For older platforms don't bother with all the bootstrap stuff. Just bootstrap 
and configure on a new machine with up-to-date tools, then type 'make dist', 
then copy the distribution tarball to the obsolete platform and build from that.
