Its sent in cleartext over the internet, making it unsuitable for cryptographic function, it is useful in the generation of entropy for things like monte carlo tests or other uses where shared pools of entropy might be useful. As such, lets add the NIST beacon as an entropy source, but disable it by default so users have to know to keep it enabled.=E2=80=9D= Neat! :-) I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that it adds 166.3 MiB to the closure, though. On the one hand, that 's a 240% increase in closure size for a feature that's =E2=80=98disabled by default=E2=80=99 (but read= on). On the other hand, this is a leaf package only installed by users who want it, and I don't like removing features without better reason. I also had to add =E2=80=98--without-nistbeacon=E2=80=99 to #:configure-fla= gs so it's not *that* disabled by default... I'm in mild favour of keeping it, but suggest we add a comment above those three inputs to point those hacking the recipe in the right directi= on. > --- > gnu/packages/linux.scm | 25 +++++++++++++++++++++---- > 1 file changed, 21 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) >=20 > diff --git a/gnu/packages/linux.scm b/gnu/packages/linux.scm > index 995864f33..d1f9f5902 100644 > --- a/gnu/packages/linux.scm > +++ b/gnu/packages/linux.scm > @@ -57,6 +57,7 @@ > #:use-module (gnu packages calendar) > #:use-module (gnu packages check) > #:use-module (gnu packages crypto) > + #:use-module (gnu packages curl) > #:use-module (gnu packages compression) > #:use-module (gnu packages databases) > #:use-module (gnu packages datastructures) > @@ -3489,16 +3490,32 @@ The following service daemons are also provided= : > (define-public rng-tools > (package > (name "rng-tools") > - (version "5") > + (version "6.1") > (source (origin > (method url-fetch) > (uri (string-append > - "http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gkernel/= " > - "rng-tools-" version ".tar.gz")) > + "https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools/archive/v" > + version ".tar.gz")) This is still missing a =E2=80=98file-name=E2=80=99. Thanks for digging in here. I started looking at this package because I'm interested in improving the situation with the Linux RNG for virtualized GuixSD. Rng-tool's rngd seems to have a part to play here. I think it would be better to keep the closure small since it could potentially end up deployed widely. How about we disable the NIST beacon support for now, and add 'rng-tools-minimal' later if the feature is requested? --qOrJKOH36bD5yhNe Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEEsFFZSPHn08G5gDigJkb6MLrKfwgFAloll+UACgkQJkb6MLrK fwgsdRAA6xO5of+CZk58HS7GdUCmHday97xcPjsZPqD//uTtBTYXJVxdxzIDv9eZ CyFNY2ZYozF1hpu8buZDO1w4xfuH5Kc9HLoTeGXOpIkMwWNy2N0iiagDCHF2wnUQ V4si8iCWBlF1E36q6QRe3U/mJ3s9jMCRMYebOIvY5l1cmuZ6GfLGMSl9pfx397tD ho/VTpRr49nd/gyGD9MhkvY8luS9isGySATTtnhTrezioiO4/aC82lziOb302c/O sYT9E08UbI3aP12tgsWWCbsuRfSP3/A/goECou6Z8Ay1DVSD6hZNfLVmsXq+NW20 kQQR86Fn4jYfx+eaj74k11e8ZouLzitzNLqoY+hgyj3VRV9vtTBYqOP9eaTuWdbV /6Ykq3mtXd2WDCFh5z6DqKDUiAWZXJwM09i8/QXSBEhd0VIUeSseNNLclod6yY0e wXhhHWQnTosZXStcFP9sXKUtU0urB1bGJRC2cy7Wy3nVKgwIAE3SilILSORUK173 CsjhCLFJ4Urx6fBwAC93nqCmREJmkQopgPY/5TkQFThBxFwwMk/svbOaIH8qq2F9 i9/gnhUQknHumTKRqKyn9Jogd3MHeWEar+8rWMaM/yoPSp3DQ2DSDDH/UMFrsllC eomOPVLuFPXUnJXHGaBVK01k8DTkJeyc8U53DqW6LYJn7wvcezY= =Xebc -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --qOrJKOH36bD5yhNe-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Dec 05 18:11:41 2017 Received: (at 29542) by debbugs.gnu.org; 5 Dec 2017 23:11:41 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:48219 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eMMNJ-0008WM-EE for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 05 Dec 2017 18:11:41 -0500 Received: from out4-smtp.messagingengine.com ([66.111.4.28]:45497) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eMMNH-0008WE-5D for 29542@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 05 Dec 2017 18:11:40 -0500 Received: from compute5.internal (compute5.nyi.internal [10.202.2.45]) by mailout.nyi.internal (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3F76209DA; Tue, 5 Dec 2017 18:11:38 -0500 (EST) Received: from frontend2 ([10.202.2.161]) by compute5.internal (MEProxy); Tue, 05 Dec 2017 18:11:38 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=fastmail.com; h= cc:content-type:date:from:in-reply-to:message-id:mime-version :references:subject:to:x-me-sender:x-me-sender:x-sasl-enc; s= fm1; bh=s24uAtKkyLo73+9bJjNsrfr4bcKzZBOhrcgQryyrBqY=; b=FTAfJupa VLtVN7SNm8dIDl49fPN0Mj4r3J3JFuHvH9L5uhQPoac05kq36XPuS15qSJjuLhYU nf6jHoEjk/ki9tYJwBGrcBuknVij/wrD7ANb2M86A5Sgu9tEq2UKFvABQw+OsepG arJVWps9UA7vg8F3GiI2VHp229qWcBUcT02dF0qBbwB+LFSm6CpNgoUYEnsB14Wr eNaI8hgrYG58tVlj4hm2YG3hRmy14SCTTs+hlUuZ9gZef7ArFFYYWBjBfN0HdmaU eMfnEpcSTjsaa6xdWVp2Tvh2YzIpUcMi4S6O7C64td9rEBOzW8zmUzwhZUfz2Vb4 2aW8C4DQqEMxSg== DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d= messagingengine.com; h=cc:content-type:date:from:in-reply-to :message-id:mime-version:references:subject:to:x-me-sender :x-me-sender:x-sasl-enc; s=fm1; bh=s24uAtKkyLo73+9bJjNsrfr4bcKzZ BOhrcgQryyrBqY=; b=MEBHUOT9mYe2bluPEsutos321NO5TwMvc6jO8JwOkjvc+ H8CCKZsfusdz7UBg2ikcVVB+1glBPL9Dpz+mHWvV+VY/Fq05SG1OIHUod+YjXZOE Alitw/9sLCJQIa2bzu4/e0ubCwBoip01MgJKDeN3dEowEDH4MLwxxWQSQydWE4Fx KN6p3jbq9O65HmqWwC5GHzSZMunoKYNzwUsYml1/NEQPCg8CAgn3PCP8iixjYwLz 008sL4Hhxty3YyD7GyA8x80mqO56zqcHokjW0li4J7zjHrW8rRzVBr22/jPoukuP m42TnYgFa+Wp7fhxDq24F7TTkrotrOAR49IvIPVZg== X-ME-Sender: Received: from localhost (cm-84.214.173.174.getinternet.no [84.214.173.174]) by mail.messagingengine.com (Postfix) with ESMTPA id 59FF32489B; Tue, 5 Dec 2017 18:11:38 -0500 (EST) From: Marius Bakke To: Leo Famulari , Tobias Geerinckx-Rice Subject: Re: [bug#29542] rng-tools: New upstream location, new releases In-Reply-To: <20171204184558.GF30970@jasmine.lan> References: <20171203003126.GA353@jasmine.lan> <20171204184558.GF30970@jasmine.lan> User-Agent: Notmuch/0.25.2 (https://notmuchmail.org) Emacs/25.3.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2017 00:11:36 +0100 Message-ID: <87wp20ydlj.fsf@fastmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="=-=-="; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 29542 Cc: 29542@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) --=-=-= Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Leo Famulari writes: > On Sun, Dec 03, 2017 at 08:49:09PM +0100, Tobias Geerinckx-Rice wrote: >> Hm. That sounds good to me. If this is going to end up as a dependency on certain systems, I certainly agree that changes things! Fedora uses Neil Horman's fork from GitHub (what this patch changes our source to): https://src.fedoraproject.org/cgit/rpms/rng-tools.git/tree/rng-tools.spec?i= d=3D2aa45beb753b7401fedcbfa3ccd0a4b005510f56#n10 CentOS fetches from SourceForge with patches by Neil Horman: https://centos.pkgs.org/7/centos-x86_64/rng-tools-5-11.el7.x86_64.rpm.html Debian uses their own fork that hasn't been touched in 6 years: https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/users/hmh/rng-tools.git/tree/debian/control= ?id=3D0235fcf189220aeecc657295b7d3fdd752d3254e Arch fetches from the old SourceForge project: https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git/tree/trunk/PKGBUILD?h=3Dpa= ckages/rng-tools&id=3D03d210e8ba320849fd19352174a1b082f4ab2b4f#n10 I don't know how to find package sources on SUSE's web page. So, I'm confident this source is okay.
