2017-12-02 21:12 GMT+01:00 = G=C3=A1bor Boskovits <boskovits@gmail.com>:
It seems, that we have a breakage in c= urrent core-updates. m4, gettext, and at least a few other packages fail to= build.

We had a discussion about that on irc, here are = the important points:

[09:34:53]* g_bor = has joined #guix
[09:34:58]<g_bor>Hello guix!
[09:37:37]<g_bor>I just tried to build something no core-updates and m4 and python-bo= ot0 does not build, I get a message that a decoding error occured in except= ion dispatcher. It seem like it's locale related, I'm on hu_HU.UTF-= 8
[09:38:03]<= g_bor>I'm tring this now on master to see if the pr= oblem persists.
[09:38:10]<g_bor>Anyone seen that?
[16:46:05]<civodul>mb[m]1: you were right about the= failing installation tests
[16:46= :16]<civodul>it did work a couple = of days ago though, so there's hope
[16:47:16]<mb[m]1>civodul: = Any idea what caused it? Haven't been paying attention lately.
[16:47:24]* kristofer has joined #guix
[16:53:03]<civodul>mb[m]1:= no idea yet, let's see
[16:54= :11]<mb[m]1>I don't understand= why core-updates is failing. I've bisected glibc down to the first two= commits on the 2.26 branch, and also tried reverting the libatomic-ops upd= ate.
[16:54:35]= <civodul>how's it failing?
[16:54:41]<civodul>well maybe i should focus on one thing at a time :-)
= [16:54:46]<mb[m]1>So the culprit is likely one of these:=C2=A0https://sourceware.org/git/?p=3Dglibc.git;a=3Dcomm= itdiff;h=3D665ce88d68fd13c5c...=C2=A0and=C2=A0https://sourceware.org/git/?p=3Dglibc.git;a=3Dco= mmitdiff;h=3Ddc258ce62ae0bbb45...

= [16:55:36]<civodul>you'll find= yourself being a libc hacker without noticing
[16:55:41]<mb[m]1>Hehe.
[16:56:24]= <civodul>in this case it's the 'configure= 9; file that leads to a decoding error
[16:56:28]<civodul>could you= check its encoding?

[17:36:36]<g_bor>Do we know about what was the last time it w= as working?

[18:41]=C2=A0<g_bor> (guile does take some time :) )
[= 18:42]=C2=A0<g_bor> I'm trying to help to switc= h the default icedtea to icedtea-8, and we'd like to that on core-updat= es...
[18:43]=C2=A0<g_bor> I've ju= st written on the mailing list, that it would be nice if we could have subs= titutes for the core-updates gnu-build-system.

[2= 0:52]=C2=A0<g_bor> reverting 667082d59104d4b964dce878f5e8c0f8ad1be958 did not he= lp

Does anyone know of a last working commit i= d?

I'm trying to seen if it's working afte= r last merge of master, but if someone knows a later point to start investi= gating the issue would help.

It would also help,= if someone with a more powerful computer could help, as building on mine i= s very slow.

Hello!

The problem is that the glibc version string is used a couple of places
to determine where locales are found.

The attached patch fixes it, though I'm not sure if it's the best approach.=C2=A0 Thoughts?

Thoughts? Thank you. I find it a little ugly to replace the exact version string with only the major+minor version substring. Why can=E2=80=99t we use the full versi= on string? Do you mean that other packages (such as m4, gettext, etc) compare against only the major+minor substring of glibc? If that is so, I think this patch is acceptable as we cannot possibly patch all other packages to use the full version string. -- Ricardo GPG: BCA6 89B6 3655 3801 C3C6 2150 197A 5888 235F ACAC https://elephly.net From unknown Tue Aug 19 23:45:14 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#29537: Core updates broken Resent-From: Marius Bakke Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-guix@gnu.org Resent-Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2017 18:44:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 29537 X-GNU-PR-Package: guix X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Ricardo Wurmus Cc: 29537@debbugs.gnu.org, =?UTF-8?Q?G=C3=A1bor?= Boskovits Received: via spool by 29537-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B29537.151232659320326 (code B ref 29537); Sun, 03 Dec 2017 18:44:01 +0000 Received: (at 29537) by debbugs.gnu.org; 3 Dec 2017 18:43:13 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:43744 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eLZEP-0005Hm-6K for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 03 Dec 2017 13:43:13 -0500 Received: from out4-smtp.messagingengine.com ([66.111.4.28]:53649) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1eLZEN-0005Hb-A1 for 29537@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 03 Dec 2017 13:43:11 -0500 Received: from compute5.internal (compute5.nyi.internal [10.202.2.45]) by mailout.nyi.internal (Postfix) with ESMTP id B828220B4A; Sun, 3 Dec 2017 13:43:10 -0500 (EST) Received: from frontend2 ([10.202.2.161]) by compute5.internal (MEProxy); Sun, 03 Dec 2017 13:43:10 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=fastmail.com; h= cc:content-type:date:from:in-reply-to:message-id:mime-version :references:subject:to:x-me-sender:x-me-sender:x-sasl-enc; s= fm1; bh=m9y0Uiu0YrwiR9Y1wadBYZRsnQBT8aA3Sp6S+19sG34=; b=iMleO415 I+uB4qOMHQ7hP02SbQNanjPlbQCWR5R8Efj40M/IbnPn4w0I7Xh+KyHMLE65q4xb BqCMJsyYY/GszXbWZ8L9kAErv/nGp+YYf9k8XJgc2zCSLbg2RCrtz0st/yHc/Rlk MyfwSdYqdNFOVG50J049c0gqvChgPf24LJnh3j2o4f4+3VM3tLw6WpQ+Sff3m2z7 SR9VrCnFyi5tp9X8Zzub37Njgx16OZb/Mm5KKQt+PgCzWZDTSea5aAaNI+loUOpL IUBmNI5MP0VRVpvSaGWzViQZtWfW3DnNl4s8zuMNEbYJ/StVNPAzcCmsgx2wCUcz o8SW618xX+Tvtg== DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d= messagingengine.com; h=cc:content-type:date:from:in-reply-to :message-id:mime-version:references:subject:to:x-me-sender :x-me-sender:x-sasl-enc; s=fm1; bh=m9y0Uiu0YrwiR9Y1wadBYZRsnQBT8 aA3Sp6S+19sG34=; b=aI49E+2SJlFGX6MXlc9gXViEgDRFC4nd2aO5M5+Q1PsyH 5tKlETCB3ylrQ8H8FWlRqM/A/IdVOqNGhabsCjgAbQeKjcLV0SwPFsLgNomuUqb0 znZbVFV3uV07rEqVJP3T9yIPSa/wVK4QU1LDfWx/2T31B60ptvaIBgKEJl7Gtov6 4PD9UVNijgvz77b5VaSsdxvPiS/Kuv+u5pHlJwDljQ4S4Ksw21e5QAFsrHYypMaO YyJB/GC6SmiKDW89k4Np+GgiXJYw2YLqTzoiTSOK+qeM9WA68509cTG8+9Lumh0F GHYMOYSnq5Xu821sBxzcQ+7WriEgHAc5QRPT/eHPg== X-ME-Sender: Received: from localhost (cm-84.214.173.174.getinternet.no [84.214.173.174]) by mail.messagingengine.com (Postfix) with ESMTPA id 420EE240F8; Sun, 3 Dec 2017 13:43:10 -0500 (EST) From: Marius Bakke In-Reply-To: <87bmjf4r0k.fsf@elephly.net> References: <87vahnzyq9.fsf@fastmail.com> <87bmjf4r0k.fsf@elephly.net> User-Agent: Notmuch/0.25.2 (https://notmuchmail.org) Emacs/25.3.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2017 19:43:08 +0100 Message-ID: <87fu8rzm83.fsf@fastmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="=-=-="; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) --=-=-= Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Ricardo Wurmus writes: > Marius Bakke writes: > >> G=C3=A1bor Boskovits writes: >> >>> It seems, that we have a breakage in current core-updates. m4, gettext,= and >>> at least a few other packages fail to build. >> >> Hello! >> >> The problem is that the glibc version string is used a couple of places >> to determine where locales are found. >> >> The attached patch fixes it, though I'm not sure if it's the best >> approach. I think it's because "glibc-versioned-locpath.patch" uses the libc VERSION constant. Perhaps we could substitute glibcs "version.h", but that might break other things. Or introduce a different variable, say GUIX_GLIBC_VERSION, and use that. I'd go the GUIX_GLIBC_VERSION way.

That o= ne seems the clearest, at least to me...

I think it's because "glibc-versioned-locpath.patch&qu= ot; uses the libc
VERSION constant.

Perhaps we could substitute glibcs "version.h", but that might br= eak
other things.=C2=A0 Or introduce a different variable, say
GUIX_GLIBC_VERSION, and use that.=C2=A0 WDYT?

If we want to reduce ugliness, we can always add an =E2=80=98effective-glibc-version=E2=80=99 pr= operty in the glibc package, but that probably won=E2=80=99t be much less ugly than calli= ng =E2=80=98version-major+minor=E2=80=99. [17:37:13] Do we have a good commit to start from? [18:40] Ok, now it's building. [18:40] I think this will take a time... [18:41] (guile does take some time :) ) [18:42] I'm trying to help to switch the default icedtea to icedtea-8, and we'd like to that on core-updates... [18:43] I've just written on the mailing list, that it would be nice if we could have substitutes for the core-updates gnu-build-system. [18:43] That could speed things like this up. [18:50] mb[m]1: just popped in for a second, core-updates is failing on aarch64 also [18:50] civodul too ^ [18:52] Oh, well. [18:52] Do we have a bug report on that already? [18:53] Now I'm trying what mb[m]1 suggested, by reverting the ncurses commit. [18:54] It might be easier to track related information in a bug... [20:52] reverting 667082d59104d4b964dce878f5e8c0f8ad1be958 did not help Does anyone know of a last working commit id? I'm trying to seen if it's working after last merge of master, but if someone knows a later point to start investigating the issue would help. It would also help, if someone with a more powerful computer could help, as building on mine is very slow. --94eb2c0551a4f74a9c055f611b4a Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
