I can't reproduce this in 01832ec. Maybe it was fixed by recent changes?

Tested with

cd /tmp
ln -s /path/to/emacs/git/master/README
/path/to/emacs/git/master/src/emacs -Q --eval '(setq vc-follow-symlinks t)' README
