It's not a bug. In coreutils, 'touch -' is documented to touch the standard output file, not a file named '-'. The POSIX specification for 'touch' allows either the coreutils behavior or the other behavior that you mentioned. If you want to touch a file named '-', the command 'touch ./-' is a portable way to do it. The POSIX specification > for 'touch' allows either the coreutils behavior or the other Thought it was a bit humorous, the bit about touching ... "stdout"? or... as in "/dev/stdout"? Definitely not in my man page for touch, new change? I do see it in "touch --help", so seems relatively new. What is touched ? /dev/stdout? "Touching the 'file' associated with stdout"? How would I (or someone) use it? Was/is there a use case that supported or needed the new feature? Curious: partially because I was/am amused and see no clue as to how to use such a feature. How would I (or someone) use it?

You run "touch -". Whatever file stdout happens to be associated = with, gets touched. It's the same idea as "cat -", except wit= h stdout rather than stdin.

It's not a bug. In coreutils, 'touch -' is documented to touch = the standard output file, not a file named '-'. The POSIX specifica= tion for 'touch' allows either the coreutils behavior or the other = behavior that you mentioned. If you want to touch a file named '-',= the command 'touch ./-' is a portable way to do it.

Perhaps you should compare 'touch --version' on the systems with differing behaviors. If the versions are different, it could be that you are using an older version on the one where it doesn't work (reading NEWS can confirm when the feature was changed; in the case of 'touch -', the behavior was changed for 5.90 back in 2005). If the versions claim to be the same (or newer than the point where NEWS documents that the change), then your vendor has applied a downstream patch, and you should ask your vendor to help you find their downstream patches and why they want the changed behavior from upstream. --=20 Eric Blake, Principal Software Engineer Red Hat, Inc. +1-919-301-3266 Virtualization: qemu.org | libvirt.org --64Axt7HL3g5WPWC9UGXaUu5MMS5WL2Ba4-- --sbFJVOb98Di0gLU6iL1Rx7KCLUiHIShQI Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEzBAEBCAAdFiEEccLMIrHEYCkn0vOqp6FrSiUnQ2oFAlmEWkkACgkQp6FrSiUn Q2qM7Af8DVnFvWnDJr/KxR2ZIPYjcAjzsmn8j79SduK5mKTRkvHAk1OdKGn9Zk66 IS3OMzYjI9Cz/Qr+uCkYLHQlrL5Y4TaXmsDS0vBGJqcwVMmf9yiL6k+FoegaxK9i wS4+lKcgkAGLoGeChnwjMoBLcFP1xHwU6yYIS6M6gpbK/h7aQtVHTDh0b7xWvncs uDE1QK/iS91dhMx7lD+Kg11sXSc9WjV4tLRdo4KujugvEXAQJgHXsmBmlEt3OLF3 VoM1QyFXo4GdFw5pz1JKnZ3XaOs/pZqgpEm4X8sHcXFnIN1UqV/AwdpIQYhZAVwA C+3EuuXMrqtvjEZ+89YhaDDbK0+wvQ== =RKqZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --sbFJVOb98Di0gLU6iL1Rx7KCLUiHIShQI-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Fri Aug 04 10:40:10 2017 Received: (at 27942) by debbugs.gnu.org; 4 Aug 2017 14:40:10 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:41925 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1dddlq-0002Pq-Ds for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 04 Aug 2017 10:40:10 -0400 Received: from mail-oi0-f44.google.com ([209.85.218.44]:34712) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1dddlo-0002Pd-Hf for 27942@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 04 Aug 2017 10:40:08 -0400 Received: by mail-oi0-f44.google.com with SMTP id x3so16756734oia.1 for <27942@debbugs.gnu.org>; Fri, 04 Aug 2017 07:40:08 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=JbeAU4PaXVeS/kzrywfKGh8z7li/vVuqLFtv0SdB/9g=; b=FbjnwfrAGq8QOasZI8HNSWaYFVqPmiUUYBbr6rmQ7HNY6sKAFTcoLK7XSXdjKaoAKp Z4ubu9ACHS8nrg6e80ZfcXtZd1VGhofrBnvblVYPc1RWB12pVjBag3LH2GyBTDeO3rXI JAlCyQGeoysvfnvLynSf3ZOTUzu2ztHHfAPUAaXCAlzll8AJ39tW5nJeF8EAfnL1Zvtx ELsbemkL9GaWpnWzWgqtT1GTOoWB6nmEU3O+KbN9JYkNxy5IYtTQitSkr11ofhlHDwzM IM2QXjp3xWb/D+f6975Uij1xT3NTIx5zNl18FTGa9vVKVOmOcqTnH92Sy6mBXj8NRFi9 8KXw== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=JbeAU4PaXVeS/kzrywfKGh8z7li/vVuqLFtv0SdB/9g=; b=tuYR88PgaGBzVLtODT4WE0xytUl+p7nGWVALx3EbjA6CkpHDkiyk3FMI+4whTwenYI XV0IxasuLnzAFAB6wpsivgWjDbAqoSKpoa1d61y1ilzcpN/QHojF0GAGOm1VFq4XHbwm wuQoLX5k9fqvB9qPHGWEJ5av59zx/5NR+9StCLVRzNDImoTCCEASr3rganhE3cn6qBBe /3l4ZGXzJS+CFMzOo3qg6AiJROjLR9n9i41vvV7Vkf4Ubjk2W0DZ138Gr/XCzB+lWzFu iGwh8/1qgJOgE61wtSh898Tux5RTQAW3E2UmA6XYnZ64sq/v5Pz+HuIegsHTpNeIqWnJ 2lgg== X-Gm-Message-State: AHYfb5h4RnWNGFKH35BBqwZvtkuAbUSbIWDxRHtBRGnt1YfEym3ruHBu kynLfl+792DW+uG3Q91HUe58idGS6w== X-Received: by 10.202.180.4 with SMTP id d4mr1793123oif.143.1501857601667; Fri, 04 Aug 2017 07:40:01 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.182.24.68 with HTTP; Fri, 4 Aug 2017 07:40:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.182.24.68 with HTTP; Fri, 4 Aug 2017 07:40:01 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <72a1ee3f-c911-6214-65b6-ce76735b30ec@redhat.com> References: <598435D8.5030607@tlinx.org> <72a1ee3f-c911-6214-65b6-ce76735b30ec@redhat.com> From: pavan kumar yalavarthi Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2017 20:10:01 +0530 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#27942: Bug regarding "touch" command To: Eric Blake Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="001a113d4232d9cfe00555ee78e7" X-Spam-Score: -2.0 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 27942 Cc: Paul Eggert , L A Walsh , 27942@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -2.0 (--) --001a113d4232d9cfe00555ee78e7 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Thank you for the clarification.
