When commands need to operate on all files at once (like wc and du to print totals for example) they have the --files0-from option to take input on stdin from xargs rather than through command arguments. Now this option might be added to ls, though while sorting is an operation that needs to operate on all data, it has scalability issues best dealt with in the external sort command (handling tmp files etc. for arbitrarily large inputs). For example I've done this sort of ordering in the past with the `find | sort | xargs ls` pattern, which you can see in: http://www.pixelbeat.org/scripts/newest cheers, Pádraig From unknown Fri Sep 05 20:54:55 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#27127: Failure in "ls -t" when parameter list is long Resent-From: Teppo =?UTF-8?Q?M=C3=A4enp=C3=A4=C3=A4?= Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-coreutils@gnu.org Resent-Date: Mon, 29 May 2017 04:21:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 27127 X-GNU-PR-Package: coreutils X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: =?UTF-8?Q?P=C3=A1draig?= Brady Cc: 27127@debbugs.gnu.org Reply-To: Teppo =?UTF-8?Q?M=C3=A4enp=C3=A4=C3=A4?= Received: via spool by 27127-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B27127.14960316271301 (code B ref 27127); Mon, 29 May 2017 04:21:02 +0000 Received: (at 27127) by debbugs.gnu.org; 29 May 2017 04:20:27 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:42391 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1dFCAN-0000Kv-Ev for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 29 May 2017 00:20:27 -0400 Received: from aibo.runbox.com ([91.220.196.211]:39942) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1dFCAL-0000Km-E3 for 27127@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 29 May 2017 00:20:26 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=runbox.com; s=rbselector1; h=In-Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Content-Type: MIME-Version:References:Reply-To:Message-ID:Subject:Cc:To:From:Date; bh=5hmn34udYVarFa5dIESobtdkL6rlzKr66aPrXWIZdsc=; b=Dqn4VDBTKVRQpPPajvGIJq5WKq 6CLI1GPhCQKgtJ/UCmjgGOchZA3naS2/So/QDvl/g6jU1or6yBDcmHBD5qVU9ka8IuuXJiZC+masY 7vPhAqLAtsTMhFGtA6k94LK/hFWvBDaivJrXcfGPTEaEPWjLytGawu/S/4A11NvO8VC5R6J2FdRf7 GBI/MLzTCTi4jcpLxy32Yaz76OZNwvG9nKUSND6ZX20fxtSw5BSLAQMdD6mtAhfzsLmftzo32/bPf gPpW/N34CY154N6i4/H+lAPUFuYFzOUJic7keZPklrE0Zli+Efcb239cZOKTE4KMelFXW0gWR7Nl8 Lq66+jWw==; Received: from [10.9.9.212] (helo=mailfront12.runbox.com) by mailtransmit02.runbox with esmtp (Exim 4.86_2) (envelope-from ) id 1dFCAI-0004D7-Pf; Mon, 29 May 2017 06:20:22 +0200 Received: from a91-153-84-22.elisa-laajakaista.fi ([91.153.84.22] helo=leroi.tm.iki.fi) by mailfront12.runbox.com with esmtpsa (uid:844293 ) (TLS1.2:RSA_AES_128_CBC_SHA1:128) (Exim 4.82) id 1dFCA3-00038Y-Aa; Mon, 29 May 2017 06:20:07 +0200 Date: Mon, 29 May 2017 07:20:02 +0300 From: Teppo =?UTF-8?Q?M=C3=A4enp=C3=A4=C3=A4?= Message-ID: References: <121f9d82-c18d-57cc-8505-641e4aa74e4d@draigBrady.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-15; format=flowed Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable In-Reply-To: <121f9d82-c18d-57cc-8505-641e4aa74e4d@draigBrady.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.24 (2015-08-30) X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.7 (/) On Mon, May 29, 2017 at 01:46:04AM +0100, P=E1draig Brady wrote: >> The command "ls -t" fails to sort files as promised, when the total leng= th of >> the names of the files to be listed (and sorted) exceeds 128 KB.
