I'm also seeing this on pretest with emacs compiled on mipsel (mips64),
using gcc-4.3. I have 1GB of RAM, and ulimit returns unlimited.

It's a Debian Lenny system, Linux 2.6.27.

I've verified that it happens with emacs -Q -nw.
