Please test it and let us know how that goes. gzip snapshot: http://meyering.net/gzip/gzip-ss.tar.xz 728 KB http://meyering.net/gzip/gzip-ss.tar.xz.sig http://meyering.net/gzip/gzip-1.8.18-00e6.tar.xz NEWS ===================================== ** Bug fixes When converting time stamps to gzip file format (32-bit unsigned) or to time_t format (system-dependent), gzip now ignores out-of-range values instead of shoehorning them into the destination format, sometimes with undefined behavior. This affects time stamps before 1970 and after 2106, and time stamps after 2038 on platforms with 32-bit signed time_t. [bug present since the beginning] Support for VMS and Amiga has been removed. It was not working anyway, and it reportedly caused file name glitches on MS-Windowsish platforms. ===================================== Changes in gzip since v1.8: Jim Meyering (11): maint: It's worth noting that my automated tests are run from a daemon without controlling TTY (which perhaps complicates things?). When I run the tests manually (i.e. starting an OpenBSD VM and SSH'ing into it), the test does not fail. However I could trigger the failure by not creating a TTY in ssh: ssh -T openbsd-vm "cd gzip-1.8.18-00e6 ; make check" In any case, with this change the test pass even without TTY. regards, - assaf From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Mon Feb 06 17:54:56 2017 Received: (at 25636) by debbugs.gnu.org; 6 Feb 2017 22:54:56 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:58143 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1casBU-0000F5-La for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 06 Feb 2017 17:54:56 -0500 Received: from zimbra.cs.ucla.edu ([131.179.128.68]:41662) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1casBT-0000Es-7B for 25636@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 06 Feb 2017 17:54:55 -0500 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zimbra.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80AC216004E; Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:48 -0800 (PST) Received: from zimbra.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (zimbra.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10032) with ESMTP id RYcm2mhUkoEA; Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zimbra.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E5C9C160061; Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:46 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at zimbra.cs.ucla.edu Received: from zimbra.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (zimbra.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id MLYy1VzHVJGV; Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:46 -0800 (PST) Received: from Penguin.CS.UCLA.EDU (Penguin.CS.UCLA.EDU [131.179.64.200]) by zimbra.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id AFD1C16004E; Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:46 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: bug#25636: new snapshot available: gzip-1.8.18-00e6 To: Assaf Gordon , Jim Meyering References: <20170206194149.GA15651@gmail.com> From: Paul Eggert Organization: UCLA Computer Science Department Message-ID: <9533151d-1aa3-a4e9-60a8-e472b4b8c1c1@cs.ucla.edu> Date: Mon, 6 Feb 2017 14:54:46 -0800 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/45.7.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <20170206194149.GA15651@gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: -0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 25636 Cc: platform-testers@gnu.org, 25636@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.0 (/) I reproduced the gzip timestamp bug on Fedora 25 x86-64, compiling gzip with 'gcc -m32' to run it in 32-bit mode. The problem is partly that gzip/test/timestamp assumes that gzip is compiled the same way that 'touch' is, and when this is not true (on my platform 'touch' is 64-bit, but I built gzip 32-bit) there are false-alarm failures. There also seems to be a real bug in Fedora 25 glibc when run in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit platform, in that 'stat', 'stat64', etc. report the wrong timestamp when the timestamp is out of 32-bit range. I filed a Fedora bug report just now, here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1419736 This bug causes gzip to fail the test case, so it appears to be a real bug. Given that this bug should not occur on "native" ports (i.e., 32-bit gzip on a 32-bit-only platform, or 64-bit gzip on a 64-bit platform) I'm inclined to think it's low priority for gzip.
