The appropriate symbol, unicode Square Root, is available, and can be inserted using the obscure name \surd. Perhaps that's a well-known word to some, but for regular TeX users, it would be very helpful to have the following rule added to the (latin-ltx--define-rules ...) form in lisp/leim/quail/latin-ltx.el: ("\\sqrt" ?=E2=88=9A) Thanks, Tyler In GNU Emacs 25.1.91.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) of 2017-01-17 built on onottra672626p Repository revision: a1ef10e6a0a216e80551dd179fc511ea8fdc4c88 Windowing system distributor 'The X.Org Foundation', version 11.0.11900000 System Description: Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 (stretch) Configured using: 'configure --with-x-toolkit=3Dlucid' Configured features: XAW3D XPM JPEG TIFF GIF PNG RSVG IMAGEMAGICK SOUND GPM DBUS GCONF GSETTINGS NOTIFY ACL LIBSELINUX GNUTLS LIBXML2 FREETYPE M17N_FLT LIBOTF XFT ZLIB TOOLKIT_SCROLL_BARS LUCID X11 Important settings: value of $LANG: en_CA.UTF-8 locale-coding-system: utf-8-unix Major mode: Lisp Interaction Minor modes in effect: tooltip-mode: t global-eldoc-mode: t electric-indent-mode: t mouse-wheel-mode: t tool-bar-mode: t menu-bar-mode: t file-name-shadow-mode: t global-font-lock-mode: t font-lock-mode: t blink-cursor-mode: t auto-composition-mode: t auto-encryption-mode: t auto-compression-mode: t line-number-mode: t transient-mark-mode: t Recent messages: For information about GNU Emacs and the GNU system, type C-h C-a. That seems a reasonable thing to add, and it's in patch form below. But what makes me hesitate to add it is that there's a commented-out "\\sqrt[3]" in the file... AFAIK, TeX has the \sqrt command for a basic square root, and \sqrt[3] for the cubic root. That suggests that the proposal is fine (we can leave the sqrt[3] commented out as is for now IMHO). That suggests that the proposal is fine (we can > leave the sqrt[3] commented out as is for now IMHO). FWIW, `\sqrt[3]` in LaTeX produces the =E2=88=9B symbol, so it would app= ear that line could be uncommented. I don't think there is a Unicode sym= bol for the square root that includes the `2`, just the 'naked' =E2=88=9A= . So there wouldn't be any point in adding support for `\sqrt[2]`. If I've misunderstood and you can continue to write [3] after getting =E2= =88=9A to get =E2=88=9B, then I have no objection to adding \sqrt. :-) --=20 (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From unknown Sat Aug 16 18:43:54 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#25594: 25.1.91; TeX input method is missing \sqrt macro Resent-From: Stefan Kangas Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2020 14:08:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 25594 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: patch To: Lars Ingebrigtsen Cc: 25594@debbugs.gnu.org, Tyler Smith Received: via spool by 25594-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B25594.157970204513654 (code B ref 25594); Wed, 22 Jan 2020 14:08:02 +0000 Received: (at 25594) by debbugs.gnu.org; 22 Jan 2020 14:07:25 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:49243 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1iuGfE-0003YA-Ng for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 22 Jan 2020 09:07:24 -0500 Received: from mail-pf1-f176.google.com ([209.85.210.176]:45373) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1iuGfD-0003Xx-DV for 25594@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 22 Jan 2020 09:07:23 -0500 Received: by mail-pf1-f176.google.com with SMTP id 2so3456958pfg.12 for <25594@debbugs.gnu.org>; Wed, 22 Jan 2020 06:07:23 -0800 (PST) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc:content-transfer-encoding; bh=E7d5ajshJCTAtm9mw1zTbePSbwJDB5voJGNxy6HCD5Q=; b=XetvMjLW39AQC+qo2DDbkc+0FXlYv4z0CdKk8NSKMzscYIJy4SqbDK3z0KAMq6V9FS 0ZT0qAXkiptfZvWeI/pJO/4m5PL7p44LSTTHdpVXXq2emJs7dtSYEtB7tK/1JuIgZr4M KuCITHsmpn0147lWzX0jnfUTxTdgxYFAVeINp+GlVaL7q8ij9+OdFj8ikf3M7eaR1UlH CX1Rau7zNpe/HzvYBB8XcxUJSmIY/O7Q5pSLe9Slb/7UfDAiA0tcIJlpwmHEv0gtauQy NQGizZSWkw3BbB1WfMlFXtfa92a/c/Q4WUdiJbJzowOGZeVkWsJYke6xVJlHAvCbxhxA y8PQ== X-Gm-Message-State: APjAAAWPqsut2m6BZNNHM+endD4bpmt6trwjTiNIXe3aXwxGzpA3ZGx9 oUBi9t5De0zMvrRv+iNRdEAhGKt9JdHAaYbMWWI= X-Google-Smtp-Source: APXvYqzZVR7eW+1ZhMzoXwXiC5o+hRHE/nssnAqIjTCbTAJNHvai0gLd4lpBUm5t1TDSRwNGDv5e4yt6FMrvvxlq0Gc= X-Received: by 2002:a63:d411:: with SMTP id a17mr11912611pgh.333.1579702037739; Wed, 22 Jan 2020 06:07:17 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <1485902188.2097642.866051648.4BFB3785@webmail.messagingengine.com> <87d0hwlv20.fsf@mouse.gnus.org> <87iml5rikv.fsf@marxist.se> <87iml5of3f.fsf@marxist.se> <87r1zrvbt8.fsf@gnus.org> In-Reply-To: <87r1zrvbt8.fsf@gnus.org> From: Stefan Kangas Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2020 15:07:06 +0100 Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Spam-Score: 0.5 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.5 (/) Lars Ingebrigtsen writes: > I don't think we can have both \sqrt and \sqrt[3] in this input method? > Granted, I don't know much about input methods, but I thought this meant > that if you typed \sqrt then you'd get =E2=88=9A immediately.
