I have recently experienced a bug with the -y argument in diff, where the pipes are totally misaligned. I went to Reddit and someone suggested I reported it here. See the problem here: https://i.imgur.com/TRKfwFQ.jpg

Can you supply the exact files you used (as attachments) and the command 
you ran? That might help others reproduce the problem.
