We want `guix system init` to "just work". In general, if some binary fails to be substituted [0], adding --fallback to the command should cause the package to be built from source, working around the issue. I think that running `guix pull` before `guix system init` is not the right choice for newbies, although there are some trade-offs [1]. Most new users will be installing from the binary GuixSD installer offered on our web site. This installer is built from a Git commit that we have tested to ensure that everything should work. We strive to keep our master branch "deployable", but of course we make mistakes sometimes. `guix pull` draws from the HEAD commit of the master branch, and so new users might end up with a broken system as their first experience. GuixSD is extremely robust once installed — you can always roll-back — so it's a good idea to initialize from a known good commit and then update. Additionally, it's likely that we will not yet have built binary substitutes for the most recent changes on the master branch, so new users will end up building some things from source if they use `guix pull`. [0] Guix is a hybrid of build-from-source and binary package management systems. It's really a build-from-source distro, but we offer so-called "binary substitutes", and they are transparently substituted for a source build if they are available and the user has authorized our substitutes server. But, if Guix expects a package to be substituted and something goes wrong, the action will fail. Using --fallback works around this and builds from source even when the substitution fails. [1] I think the main drawback of installing from the release tag without `guix pull` is that the initial generation of the GuixSD system will be lacking important upstream bug fixes. I think users should `guix pull && guix system reconfigure` immediately after initializing the system. Guix actually nags users to do this: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/tree/guix/scripts/system.scm?id=08b3e4a97066c9baaf39e3df7c2dd9c39e693ead#n577 From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Wed Nov 23 11:46:39 2016 Received: (at 24993) by debbugs.gnu.org; 23 Nov 2016 16:46:39 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:39494 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1c9agx-00071g-BW for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 23 Nov 2016 11:46:39 -0500 Received: from mail-pg0-f51.google.com ([74.125.83.51]:33406) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1c9agv-00071R-CD for 24993@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 23 Nov 2016 11:46:37 -0500 Received: by mail-pg0-f51.google.com with SMTP id 3so7863123pgd.0 for <24993@debbugs.gnu.org>; Wed, 23 Nov 2016 08:46:37 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=alaskasi-com.20150623.gappssmtp.com; s=20150623; h=subject:to:references:cc:from:organization:message-id:date :user-agent:mime-version:in-reply-to:content-transfer-encoding; bh=KRsYF+A6eP9dfh2dBwblScV/BgCdpSI8R7+IRsLxBWs=; b=iHyJJDEK3NkAYNZDLf5C6MrYcv25KlaRnxNoN5iFXSP5CQAH12e0ZyBKSAKS7wYA15 MZ0qQGTtq75+PHLc0mCBBuYpQIXSV++NmgraIe8jS0ihyPlXM00LiJC5HF62yD5ptWMV 4mfWJTzMzeXXZ6W4s8vXyvCfNnbq7liIzYrM6bfN2fE10bUgOw7YlRs4pj2NN1KLioIB IYLMvRR0MTfsHTVJ2foMmHf4dv0P23irmq6hnx2n2iuaiCWOLF8Xo/qh/cwCrTx0+s8Z iWz6HFjKKNYqEBOu5pHGhYqEvuGeY3u2c8kv9Zmc4e7hI1xhv4z3M9akN3t+nDiYm4rU BWAA== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:subject:to:references:cc:from:organization :message-id:date:user-agent:mime-version:in-reply-to :content-transfer-encoding; bh=KRsYF+A6eP9dfh2dBwblScV/BgCdpSI8R7+IRsLxBWs=; b=cFj1HmCd0IH8NkJ9v7c/YwPDj0kMuCB2dPFgv92SLyXMeJ88edmfOEXiz7SdLUNxNb hxyVI4ngJ36zEhs4DMdJzxXLIcNRCJ0htWbamPCfrR39qShLzvlqobf1T3Xv6CCNNroG c6E/tUyGmwNTrpgHxEQ/fxSX5mBfe4c57l5ug63a6QkDjwKWc/gYGCm9XgGvHcXL/OOj aoSqG7u3rsxck9HtMpyRuaU8f7VNP9zz0tfyX/GdtXXdQmnVuIxoxFe1fgQdjnhDyou+ feeK+nIKn4uYWpJ3d+MA4Ww9fuL2iRxeF6orq/5ooyUBdyg04PwPHk+T/t9FyUy+DVuZ TnVg== X-Gm-Message-State: AKaTC02sp7aEHDMRTuMjGtmgK4KC2IKelJB9ZQE2gPo/xrRNmCaoyJdHtdvTvX22JGH/Ssb0 X-Received: by 10.98.23.88 with SMTP id 85mr3702329pfx.21.1479919591204; Wed, 23 Nov 2016 08:46:31 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.1.50] (75-131-237-24.static.gci.net. What I remember happening was that on some package I got an error something like "could not get package such-and-such, may be caused by network errors" which wasn't fixed by running the command again. Then I ran with --fallback as recommended, but then it seemed to be building the entire gnome desktop from source. After a few hours of this it was still compiling low-level gnome packages, so I gave up, and the folks at #guix irc suggested guix pull. To be honest, I can't remember which package it was. I'll try again with a fresh installation. We have a new machine for our build farm front-end currently being installed and tested, and that server should have a great deal more storage. You should try passing --substitute-urls=https://hydra.gnu.org in case the issue is with the mirror. Otherwise, I think your options for using the 0.11.0 installer are to use --fallback and build the missing things from source, or use `guix pull` as was suggested on IRC. I expect the latter option to require less building. It will build stuff if it can't find a substitute (not an error). '--fallback' is only required when substitution fails (an error). That particular test failure was a bug in GnuPG's test suite that we worked around: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/commit/?id=d404a6f9711c8dcc1cc6cf55d8c07901aa450192 Code with an expiration date is very annoying! It sounds like you will need to use `guix pull`. What do others think? Should we mention `guix pull` in the installation documentation? I'm skeptical for reasons described upthread. I think the real bug is that the installation image becomes brittle as time passes (so I changed the subject of my reply). Does anyone have ideas to mitigate this? Can we tweak the mirrors? Will this become less pressing when we have more storage space and can store substitutes for a longer period? I think we should add 'guix pull' as a regular part of the install process, and we should add more example configs so people can mix and match them with fewer issues by virtue of having more examples to compare against. It would also give us examples to point to for 'how to use encrypted partitions', 'how to not use wicd', 'how to use a swapfile', 'i want my kid's account's shell to be 'bambam' or 'gcompris', how do I do that?' --=20 Efraim Flashner =D7=90=D7=A4=D7=A8=D7=99=D7=9D = =D7=A4=D7=9C=D7=A9=D7=A0=D7=A8 GPG key =3D A28B F40C 3E55 1372 662D 14F7 41AA E7DC CA3D 8351 Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed on emails sent or received unencrypted --bpVaumkpfGNUagdU Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCgAdFiEEkVdB/rIvpOM7bo+N9MHTkX6s7pMFAlg9P9UACgkQ9MHTkX6s 7pND/Q/+IXFHaZ7S3NbMOImn4LTViQJwmjdEL0RmUEaZ2WAOwCBvFnlT+6VBXAGf rViib1bRalNNBKwqs9O/zLyxKxShEY5EpftpK+m9eHDoFj8qnRCQuOOdf0Fo0tQi XG4IfmaVsTGctcN29706pSK7Zw4Ffof4cWIaBcIQUvTU8sMIZodXjPDit6m0Ul3u fyE9H02E+a5F9Y5/dGSY6mHtfI0THWT4dlxWafqTGNHaveYamrYVkm59jhmY+GV+ udzkhlBYmAm3FdDC0RK8RWxv4WBjfawsK2wyQiK+R0bBoz2QHM+4zz9Kub+TaeAS ZunHmV9vGgfiJV2PFpxoxkiDLA1JzmObPxqevYecL769HvkI4o17ZLDk+MM+8yi6 AMuXmTN4Iud5O1Q1AsJ+sh6eRw6r9mEOPNRuL4wG6blPYfC1r+AOGiwbck2RdANf 1UG5UCwFVYV6crjiUZkc5KEF0xZ/4NukRI++64EcjgjtkIhabgG+BX9fPRd+QWRX psrfNlvW9dK6lRwfE/dWF3stnDGQpWaeaXaQJ4ZOsp+ci4CL803H2lVn9me8+W2N n4569Vb0iQG7KvQZVf9629Xd9/y9k5XZx8D3Uw9iQIJS+1Y7ajf8FRxL10flv6mg naANejOtghvL985MF1PTmtWIDIUEwpVaw6qNY/Vl84Io+fnZ+S8= =WHs0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --bpVaumkpfGNUagdU-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Nov 29 04:17:48 2016 Received: (at 24993) by debbugs.gnu.org; 29 Nov 2016 09:17:48 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:45592 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1cBeXr-0000hs-Rj for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 29 Nov 2016 04:17:48 -0500 Received: from mail-qt0-f195.google.com ([209.85.216.195]:33362) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1cBeXo-0000hb-RM for 24993@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 29 Nov 2016 04:17:45 -0500 Received: by mail-qt0-f195.google.com with SMTP id n6so14742689qtd.0 for <24993@debbugs.gnu.org>; Tue, 29 Nov 2016 01:17:44 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=craven.ch; s=google; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=DHQZTbwX3bqVrx14pk01HaCaOHx5fCo5im3t1dzGAYE=; b=KBAK4befm/SZ1R/r4CIeIXiPTKdBQF+Rjoveb2tGCijTeirFfInrZZ3nJSw28cWx63 gwrwVyEAUiOW3PjL3psjmO8rCwhZQ0C6gq2AyAv5oGkKQ1ibP2kYpgYD7qILzxUIdqv4 8RCTdqibkxQzHyX63Ur4f2Sr4U+pCZUUrMTjM= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=DHQZTbwX3bqVrx14pk01HaCaOHx5fCo5im3t1dzGAYE=; b=lNcWNyMQqPpI9UmfrLsLhYESLs1llCzB4PqfjlpA3LVPAJx3ni6rrZH0jv0rBC8VLr bakfYSyZ8oB0boyxp9XiWUj8p6dp3XlnI+kLDcc568y89L3iLhKXijNMUbP+/oGVYuwR RzEphf0JztXE3hqClJpiHDlGpVQqp1cgBkcvr6iTVgk9xOOYPzUkNXXyE7P0LqpLKXRv 48iPbrGY9bqjJopuWpIwqb+68ipwZsSJdpDjzLrtIKocm1arByAfTqM5ntbBhuL2I0vQ 8yopVLtsTPj9c9ETBr36K0SRyGp0GlIxz80c7dEUFnQu9gVrS/jjpHT57YjUFb/47/iY jVfg== X-Gm-Message-State: AKaTC00GiVpPOavJMKC6wFNSKhVqcR0QvaGOAvDxiktssIonTyfT0ojcTj6F583nTefvtJsx4GZ8nsWIjupabA== X-Received: by 10.200.53.53 with SMTP id y50mr26155734qtb.127.1480411059178; Tue, 29 Nov 2016 01:17:39 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.12.162.65 with HTTP; Tue, 29 Nov 2016 01:17:38 -0800 (PST) X-Originating-IP: [178.197.236.105] In-Reply-To: <20161129084406.GF2509@macbook42.flashner.co.il> References: <7d52d8ee-c253-685b-1871-f908850ee606@alaskasi.com> <20161123044607.GA23298@jasmine> <0cf83259-2c5d-ae51-5697-02299251051c@alaskasi.com> <20161123202911.GA3616@jasmine> <9ffdf0e5-a584-adb6-91ce-271a507bb14c@alaskasi.com> <20161129023336.GB21607@jasmine> <20161129084406.GF2509@macbook42.flashner.co.il> From: David Craven Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2016 10:17:38 +0100 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#24993: System installer grows brittle with time To: Efraim Flashner Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 X-Spam-Score: -0.2 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 24993 Cc: 24993@debbugs.gnu.org, Christopher Howard , Leo Famulari X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.2 (/) I have a nice one too. A solution that some suggested before (but for other reasons) would be to include more packages on the installation image. The image is currently slightly below 1G, but we could add binaries for GTK+, Python, and a few other relevant packages. We=E2=80=99d need to find= out what makes sense and how much extra space it would take. > this become less pressing when we have more storage space and can store > substitutes for a longer period? True. The mirror has room to store things for a long period of time, but there=E2=80=99s a subtle problem with non-deterministic builds: the mirror = might cache a narinfo and the corresponding nar, then the narinfo leaves the cache, then a new narinfo is fetched from hydra.gnu.org, and at this point the mirror has a narinfo advertising a hash that doesn=E2=80=99t match that of its nar. Of course the solution to this is reproducible builds, but the fact is that we still have a bunch of non-reproducible packages. I recently lowered narinfo caching time in the mirror because of that: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix/maintenance.git/commit/?id=3Dcaaeb7= bea3515e7ef45e33e5e75674f7b72c2f06 =E2=80=A6 but that=E2=80=99s not great since it means the mirror can lose n= arinfos quickly, even though it has enough room to store them. Ideas? Ludo=E2=80=99. Commit 4e854b1814a9216ae7cc90aef4d82fd989a519c3 added the whole bare-bones OS as a dependency of the installation image. Thus, everything bare-bones depends on is included in the image.
