I've now clarified the doc string:

+If `shr-use-fonts' is set, the mean width of a character is used
+to compute the pixel width to be used."

Hm, that's badly phrased; I'll fix it.  But that's what's supposed to
happen, anyway.  Seems to work for me on the trunk.
