The cus-edit+.el code for this is essentially the same as the cus-edit.el code for commands such as `customize-rogue'. And such commands are intended (of course) to be usable with any buffer current. Similarly, there is nothing in a non-interactive function such as `custom-variable-state' that says that it should be called only from a particular buffer or set of buffers. It is true that such functions use `eval', and there is a risk that the property value is a sexp whose evaluation raises an error. Perhaps a usage note is called for in the doc of such functions? Indeed, the OP was able to reproduce the error with the normal customize interface (see above), so the problem isn't with cus-edit+. AFAICT, the problem is that auctex uses a standard-value for Tex-auto-global that includes (file-name-directory load-file-name) as part of the expression. --=-=-=-- From unknown Sun Aug 10 16:46:34 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#24920: 24.5; Error on customize-update-all Resent-From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:05:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 24920 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: npostavs@users.sourceforge.net Cc: Frank Roland , 24920@debbugs.gnu.org, Drew Adams Received: via spool by 24920-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B24920.163065984319787 (code B ref 24920); Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:05:01 +0000 Received: (at 24920) by debbugs.gnu.org; 3 Sep 2021 09:04:03 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:42931 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1mM57C-000594-OY for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 03 Sep 2021 05:04:02 -0400 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:55444) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1mM57B-00058Z-OT for 24920@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 03 Sep 2021 05:04:02 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:In-Reply-To:Date: References:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=iPzVNIWEVRXIa57/0Q0SU2SKR1tD/EjTgqvg3IFlhuY=; b=qyTceH3g0a2WI7wUl3g8UYwcTE Repk/ONosIbzpgiwpakWox8qXCy2zEKDgewkKMK1X85E2vwyOaSG+IRCUCXM47pIkxU203iWi23l8 q8J9bvIwBLr5EbqOtmvpUHeOiUwrFgu+XLJ7jM3+44GO8X6mN+zvMW72kZhKhg4BJGFk=; Received: from [84.212.220.105] (helo=elva) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1mM571-0003sN-Vj; Fri, 03 Sep 2021 11:03:54 +0200 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen References: <0b68d593-eddc-4b62-b8bc-7322367aaff1@default> <87zil6nayi.fsf@users.sourceforge.net> Date: Fri, 03 Sep 2021 11:03:51 +0200 In-Reply-To: <87zil6nayi.fsf@users.sourceforge.net> (npostavs@users.sourceforge.net's message of "Thu, 10 Nov 2016 18:59:01 -0500") Message-ID: <87lf4eyqrs.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/28.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. (I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately weren't resolved at the time.) Hm... this is the definition of that variable: (defcustom TeX-auto-global (if (file-writable-p "/usr/local/var/auctex") "/usr/local/var/auctex" "~/.emacs.d/auctex") "Directory containing automatically generated information. For storing automatic extracted information about the TeX macros shared by all users of a site." :group 'TeX-file :type 'directory) Doesn't seem to be any mention of load-file-name. There's stuff like (defvar TeX-lisp-directory (file-name-directory load-file-name) but that shouldn't affect this user option, surely? Hm... anybody know what's going on? (Or has this been fixed in the years since it was reported? I haven't tried to reproduce the problem.) -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From unknown Sun Aug 10 16:46:34 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#24920: 24.5; Error on customize-update-all Resent-From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Mon, 02 May 2022 10:13:01 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 24920 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: npostavs@users.sourceforge.net Cc: Frank Roland , 24920@debbugs.gnu.org, Drew Adams Received: via spool by 24920-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B24920.165148633620460 (code B ref 24920); Mon, 02 May 2022 10:13:01 +0000 Received: (at 24920) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 May 2022 10:12:16 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:34931 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nlT2N-0005Jv-Ul for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 02 May 2022 06:12:16 -0400 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:41490) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1nlT2M-0005In-Ld for 24920@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 02 May 2022 06:12:15 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Content-Type:MIME-Version:Message-ID:In-Reply-To:Date: References:Subject:Cc:To:From:Sender:Reply-To:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-ID:Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender: Resent-To:Resent-Cc:Resent-Message-ID:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=vqqRkjtPFILJt1fGO64TNcJsEkTLLpJ4kuRecNzxHFI=; b=dpnMkcaNFEZ+LO2EtUg1n8t2Xp bjk3CaUm3hxhjFYHwoxfENoiBLpWvpNmHw3ACUedWxthlEy4MY3Xk4LOMKiJzI/WUEf8T8goPmzBx Rt5sftI96z2ZBdCfPW38BiEimB8XqvmO5J6ACxBnMqcMbpSB26bx9IllniYZ29Kze+8w=; Received: from [84.212.220.105] (helo=xo) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1nlT2B-0007sD-0S; Mon, 02 May 2022 12:12:05 +0200 From: Lars Ingebrigtsen References: <0b68d593-eddc-4b62-b8bc-7322367aaff1@default> <87zil6nayi.fsf@users.sourceforge.net> <87lf4eyqrs.fsf@gnus.org> X-Now-Playing: Pet Shop Boys's _Inner Sanctum (1)_: "The Dictator Decides-Inside A Dream" Date: Mon, 02 May 2022 12:12:02 +0200 In-Reply-To: <87lf4eyqrs.fsf@gnus.org> (Lars Ingebrigtsen's message of "Fri, 03 Sep 2021 11:03:51 +0200") Message-ID: <874k282qh9.fsf@gnus.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/29.0.50 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam.
