Hello,

FWIW, I think something related happens with icomplete when
icomplete-separator -> "\n":

In emacs -Q, eval

(setq icomplete-separator "\n")

and

M-x icomplete-mode <return>

Then, e.g.

  M-x m

The minibuffer prompt is invisible.  But you see that it's "there"
when you hit <left>.

This could be related because icomplete also uses an overlay in the
minibuffer (after-string in this case).
