Your patch seems reasonable to me.
The reason I chose the name UNUSED is that I had in mind
it would stand for just the initial value (without the =).
But then I imitated the suggestion to include the =.
You're right that name UNUSED is not appropriate for that.
So I suggest
char *ident_start = UNUSED;
and so on. That should make it very clear, and the name
fits what it does.
