While in that transient mode, invoke something that pops a buffer. d i s p l a M-x complete-symbol RET M-x pop-to-buffer RET *Messages* RET A new frame is created even though pop-up-frames is nil. I believe the reason is that the *Completions* window is "soft-dedicated" in minibuffer.el. My fix would be to exit the transient completion-in-region-mode before displaying other buffers. This can be done by setting display-buffer-alist appropriately in completion-in-region-mode, much like it sets and resets minor-mode-overriding-map-alist. I've tried this in an extension of mine, SLY, with a mode very similar to completion-in-region-mode, but the same technique doesn't work there for some reason. Anyway, the _failed_ patch after my signature. I'm unable to reproduce this problem in Emacs 28, but I'm not sure I understand the recipe -- surely Emacs doesn't pop up a new frame on pop-to-buffer without further customisation? So is there something missing in the recipe, or has the bug just gone away over the years? --=20 (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From unknown Wed Aug 20 00:21:05 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#22997: 25.0.50; reusing windows in pop-to-buffer while in completion-in-region-mode opens new frames Resent-From: =?UTF-8?Q?Jo=C3=A3o_?= =?UTF-8?Q?T=C3=A1vora?= Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org Resent-Date: Wed, 02 Dec 2020 12:45:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 22997 X-GNU-PR-Package: emacs X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Lars Ingebrigtsen Cc: 22997@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 22997-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B22997.160691308618635 (code B ref 22997); Wed, 02 Dec 2020 12:45:02 +0000 Received: (at 22997) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 Dec 2020 12:44:46 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:34648 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kkRV0-0004qU-4y for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 02 Dec 2020 07:44:46 -0500 Received: from mail-io1-f53.google.com ([209.85.166.53]:43281) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1kkRUy-0004qI-Qa for 22997@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 02 Dec 2020 07:44:45 -0500 Received: by mail-io1-f53.google.com with SMTP id n14so1709531iom.10 for <22997@debbugs.gnu.org>; Wed, 02 Dec 2020 04:44:44 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-transfer-encoding; bh=D+HvDAjKzKdV/htGFp+5L4itjRLsVQPguBc5cQBNzGI=; b=lyQwTcAW8kXQ1sZmD4OZm5xn7bds2mC6ep/nQVdF377HhnBlDCRscIbR6pJ3SzMxNo 5qnzk07b7J5Gs1+NMJNxc28EuQZUlGJx+oW91199/nHzgH/UR7Mg5n3Fbeza1xCGqE7r JKeDVfIh9690xtalbIJH1d7+oW0wuFx2BHEiyadcYteLG1CbLZ22VqoCI/FogEq38Ts+ WB1bbVXMWmi0FtZamCkWRgKlzt91hCc5i78L5WpG1O0one+Z542KpqoaAEuDIZVSQ+7J aUtgtCbCSXirxv12g3K+4TkggwvkxvoMPFjioWMUWjxZCupSNC1T+vs8n9GNUJQ/4lnn 2E8w== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc:content-transfer-encoding; bh=D+HvDAjKzKdV/htGFp+5L4itjRLsVQPguBc5cQBNzGI=; b=Et+9u2p+Kr8trjrIEaKeKHHFsmtR/lZyMgbWh01Y5OedaaaxvoFy6suorKM0yqfkoE WRRecktlzVQlhmYe4jLsGXiOosHBmI52uNL+WL0r1hVfx9Jq2vp2YDhRXlQi9iE9hjFG 02aon8MC5qktlRZTdJPcoNOc/cwbtMWg7xY6piWcyRPcWP1MWmsSvx4UeuRLgrTQU6BL yJzCNpowyzInhCVAZpWgRPox6q9EcKSRg8p46SmOnk3WqKzhO1nlDR3xRGNqNyn1fvgY fNdgl0oTrFja+WJF10+8ygUshxR0NBl/7NA4KuIXLp0xQyoVjsLuWT4EZVfmT1rrCC/w FYwg== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM532uBPZzi1VpgjnEodlHnskW6Do9+2i02IT7YCfpdGoWPvPumINN FocxuZxlyhrnfmDuzfvTUKrHf908uHSBGQZW8R4= X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJwuQvBo4CGh2G/b02c938LlnTT6rZwQ3SRgOucbqZ1uc+Qt1tL6NUIo47JE3WsOcETXYBeyQLV9M2o+x1hvG/k= X-Received: by 2002:a6b:92c4:: with SMTP id u187mr1670667iod.57.1606913079172; Wed, 02 Dec 2020 04:44:39 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <87im9k1j0x.fsf@gnus.org> In-Reply-To: <87im9k1j0x.fsf@gnus.org> From: =?UTF-8?Q?Jo=C3=A3o_?= =?UTF-8?Q?T=C3=A1vora?= Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2020 12:44:26 +0000 Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) On Wed, Dec 2, 2020 at 12:37 PM Lars Ingebrigtsen wrote: Hi Lars, > surely Emacs doesn't pop up a new frame on > pop-to-buffer without further customisation? I have a vague recollection that the recipe was accurate, and eventually something in window.el was fixed, by me or Martin or both. Likely I forgot to x-ref the bug id. If you can't reproduce it, I think you should just close this bug. Hey, I found commit 5d34e1b2881caa5743816030c2e9cdcda58e9719 that looks relevant.
