On AIX 7.1, "make check" fails to start perhaps due to shell syntax/makefile syntax errors.
BTW, "gmake check" does succeed.
The error is:

$ make check-TESTS V=1
/bin/sh: 0403-057 Syntax error at line 1 : `if' is not matched.
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 2.

On OpenSoalris 5.11, both i86pc and sun4u, test 'zgrep-signal' fails. log attached.
(note: no failure on OpenSolaris 5.10).

On Minix 3.3.0, gzip fails to build due to gnulib's fflush module.  log attached.
Seems similar to "issue 2" here:
