Where is Guix installed?=C2=A0 If you used the =E2=80=9Cbinary = installation=E2=80=9D method,
Guix is installed in /root/.guix-profile, which is why you only get to
see its manual when running =E2=80=98info=E2=80=99 as root.

HTH,
Ludo=E2=80=99.

Yes, that is the case, there is no mystery, there is indeed a=C2=A0/root/.guix-profile/share/info/guix.in= fo
and there is NOT a
~user/.guix-profile/share/info/guix.info

However I con= sider that a bug. Here I am a user, using guix, and I expect "info gui= x" to work. Why would the user have to switch to root just to read thi= s one info file? After installing guix,=C2=A0 I would expect guix.info to be in my defalt .guix-profile, or a least a= notice of how to install
guix.info. ( coping and linking I know how to do, that= 's not the problem. It's a question
of creating a polished piece of software.) Would "guix package -i= guix" do the right thing?
That se= ems all wrong, would install stuff I already have.

I acknowledge my = understanding of the guix system is incomplete.

Would "guix package -i guix" do > the right thing? > That seems all wrong, would install stuff I already have. I think you need to adjust your expectations. You only have Guix available *in the root user's profile*. Each user has their own package profile, so running 'guix package -i guix' as your regular user is exactly what you want. Why would you expect the system to magically read the info pages out of root's profile? It's not installing stuff you already have because your user *didn't* have it. So, install the Guix package and set $INFOPATH to include $HOME/.guix-profile/share/info. Ludo, to avoid this confusion in the future, perhaps the binary installation instructions for folks on foreign distros could have an additional instruction. After symlinking root's guix to /usr/local/bin/guix, the documentation could suggest symlinking the docs to /usr/local/share/info. I like Efraim's suggestion of instructing users to `guix package -i guix`. > > - Dave > > > From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Jan 19 19:45:21 2016 Received: (at 22402) by debbugs.gnu.org; 20 Jan 2016 00:45:21 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:54187 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84) (envelope-from ) id 1aLgtk-0006he-Sl for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 19 Jan 2016 19:45:21 -0500 Received: from mail-io0-f169.google.com ([209.85.223.169]:33422) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84) (envelope-from ) id 1aLgti-0006hR-N4 for 22402@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 19 Jan 2016 19:45:19 -0500 Received: by mail-io0-f169.google.com with SMTP id q21so3839305iod.0 for <22402@debbugs.gnu.org>; Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:45:18 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; bh=vehVDYFtKdusKdS/nOPas6gvwYxBxoTyhLzUIBqn4WI=; b=b2aR3hCe63oayldrRvJpAS+W9sGiwgtI5rb9YDJSGhU15ZcRNlJNuhVx9Dr2BDXB2x xhQIq2wBz8G5mS7Su/qzEiuKKLEMY0Bk3pmBqXH5ZbErbLOldYxIfKtb88T3hfn5kcIc sM2AECY80pqOSO4RZyz+KoxKmgF2NDBMv9hm/ihq0wIXrERzKBRAEhS+yDW2N4bpGeVj ohtU2bALebCOubKB8dtAvOjNY1YALZTtfhm9udwrD5TVhT6yELYU/OzkXtobhLZNw1GS n7jvnpptJkNOhasItWRz92AmzOjEvJU6zkpkL1kSgAsaQPESB+Fk78voMaqfH4mA4exu eYCw== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date :message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=vehVDYFtKdusKdS/nOPas6gvwYxBxoTyhLzUIBqn4WI=; b=H07GR/NwqUky1iYJQHYClauC6eOKG5Fj7Rs9OLHvCLx//kOGJmSADhqIvWUnRZtS7C iVLQuipWbPyjO/BvtZK0Oyq4xyDDOJHnzsclyR8SmWvn6dqEuexepWhg/yCE8x/nf7Rb n8ZWYoiWyiBm9BWr18ox9e31VH2KNu3GKSIbrPkrO3B+ZEmSbLrqziPFI2kIA9azWwpm 9PUaiGkkk3zt/XdcooGR8cqLX4181hvDrLuBxZjgF5RO0+shmrHrVzoDRkl+SHqKzms8 1uH0f6ZBB3iUqsvdaK1v0nXUYhBSA1xhXAZ9FC7Zaagwxnr2tQCxn4BdC6gEsGcMVACx F4tQ== X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQkaQADmhzfv6+7UoUEQ7oA2Fpnb3ZJqS0Htzbyu2aZBjLjYMCCL05eNArCVAJcjQ7bSAIrTIUbat+ymiYLBErchW51erg== MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Received: by 10.107.30.15 with SMTP id e15mr29122842ioe.166.1453250712768; Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:45:12 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.36.208.22 with HTTP; Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:45:12 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <20160119220234.GA4641@jasmine> References: <20160119014714.GA13864@jasmine> <87a8o2djsu.fsf@gnu.org> <20160119220234.GA4641@jasmine> Date: Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:45:12 -0800 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#22402: info guix pages From: carl hansen To: Leo Famulari Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=001a1140c900811efc0529b94c58 X-Spam-Score: -0.4 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 22402 Cc: "Thompson, David" , 22402@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -0.4 (/) --001a1140c900811efc0529b94c58 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 On Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 2:02 PM, Leo Famulari wrote: > On Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 12:17:32PM -0500, Thompson, David wrote: > > On Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 4:34 AM, carl hansen > wrote: > > > > > > Yes, that is the case, there is no mystery, there is indeed a > > > /root/.guix-profile/share/info/guix.info > > > and there is NOT a > > > ~user/.guix-profile/share/info/guix.info > > > > snip snip Ok I did, as suggested, guix package -i guix which I was afraid of, fearing some ouroboros strange loop destruction of the universe; fears unfounded, only curious effect was dozens or hundreds of warning: collision encountered: /gnu/store/wfvxxpdhnzd59v ... warning: arbitrarily choosing /gnu/store/wfvxxpdhnzd59vkad1z... type messages. Ok I did, as suggested,
guix packag= e -i guix
which I was afraid of, fearing some ouroboros stran= ge loop destruction of the universe;
fears unfounded, only cu= rious effect was dozens or hundreds of

warning: collision= encountered: /gnu/store/wfvxxpdhnzd59v ...
warning: arbitrarily choosin= g /gnu/store/wfvxxpdhnzd59vkad1z...
=C2=A0
type me= ssages. Otherwise, seems to work.

A= s suggested by Efraim Flashner=C2=A0 , add that command to the Binary insta= ll instructions.

Now, about your fi= ne manual, on http://w= ww.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/=C2=A0
we see "last updated November 04, 2015"
Please use a cronjob to update the manual nightly , or so,= to the latest version. The universe will thank you.

Otherwise, seems to work. That's not optimal. Those messages mean that of the store directories linked to from your profile, more than one provide a given path. For example, GNU Parallel and moreutils both have a path "bin/parallel": /gnu/store/7ggbvsql79s5i05a3v8cbn48kdrzf7nc-parallel-20151222/bin/parallel /gnu/store/ax4ppgzmx5cjqr813l3djgzhiniam1yz-moreutils-0.57/bin/parallel If you install both in your profile, those two paths both become: ~/.guix-profile/bin/parallel And so you get a warning and the conflict is resolved arbitrarily. You can't have both of the "parallels" in your profile at once. Were the conflicting paths related to Guix? > > As suggested by Efraim Flashner , add that command to the Binary install > instructions. > > Now, about your fine manual, on http://www.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/ > we see "last updated November 04, 2015" > Please use a cronjob to update the manual nightly , or so, to the latest > version. That's not optimal. Those messages mean that of the store direct= ories
linked to from your profile, more than one provide a given path.

For example, GNU Parallel and moreutils both have a path "bin/parallel= ":
/gnu/store/7ggbvsql79s5i05a3v8cbn48kdrzf7nc-parallel-20151222/bin/parallel<= br> /gnu/store/ax4ppgzmx5cjqr813l3djgzhiniam1yz-moreutils-0.57/bin/parallel

If you install both in your profile, those two paths both become:
~/.guix-profile/bin/parallel

And so you get a warning and the conflict is resolved arbitrarily. You
can't have both of the "parallels" in your profile at once.
Were the conflicting paths related to Guix?

I= don't have the lines anymore, I think they are related to lots of pack= ages beside guix.
As I learn, then I will know more; for now = I will ignore ignorable messages from my
computer, and move o= n.
