Hi,

the documentation of "values"= ; (c-h v values) is not accurate.

(setq x 1) C-x C-e
values C-x C= -e

In the above form, values is "nil". However, per the do= c, "values"
should be (1).

On the other side, M-: d= oes work.

I've looked a bit closed at what the semantics are, and they seem to be pretty obscure. Here's the only place where we put things on `values': if (printflag) { Vvalues = Fcons (val, Vvalues); if (EQ (Vstandard_output, Qt)) Fprin1 (val, Qnil); else Fprint (val, Qnil); } printflag is an option in many functions, so if you say (eval-region 2 13 t) then the value will be stored in `values' -- otherwise not. And this has been this way since at least 1991 (which is the initial revision of lread.c). `eval-expression' has this: (if (null eval-expression-debug-on-error) (push (eval (let ((lexical-binding t)) (macroexpand-all exp)) t) values) etc. So it's being set a few places, and it's used in one single place: `elisp--eval-defun'. Anyway, I guess this means that `eval-last-sexp' is just missing a push? So I've now added that to Emacs 28. -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Mon Feb 08 02:16:29 2021 Received: (at control) by debbugs.gnu.org; 8 Feb 2021 07:16:29 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:49685 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1l90ma-0003wx-Py for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 08 Feb 2021 02:16:29 -0500 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:44442) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1l90mX-0003wc-Mo for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 08 Feb 2021 02:16:27 -0500 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Subject:From:To:Message-Id:Date:Sender:Reply-To:Cc: MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Content-ID: Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender:Resent-To:Resent-Cc :Resent-Message-ID:In-Reply-To:References:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=BS0wjC+aAMK9VohOPuz1SVr2LT6sZ5bnsbZ8uLWWrcg=; b=KcJsjojRZ8sjrDjEhN1RRVhSzM kotkAjMEL92OxOpXgCbncrQdM1cjIx5M81Qbv8okIPNqxaCBBoUNT0DbtIYfrWr/ej2gb5hZ9NC8O 5pH5ieA/kaaMDM1OzeSjUz8PC68zUSozK6/wYr8C6V3VbqGNL9oNKGXUzU92utnB+BAM=; Received: from cm-84.212.202.86.getinternet.no ([84.212.202.86] helo=xo) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1l90mQ-0002PT-6M for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 08 Feb 2021 08:16:20 +0100 Date: Mon, 08 Feb 2021 08:16:17 +0100 Message-Id: <87a6sfm3lq.fsf@gnus.org> To: control@debbugs.gnu.org From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Subject: control message for bug #22066 X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. It's just a memory leak plus one of the very few special-case variables that are globally bound yet shouldn't be considered a `special-variable-p` (The only other such cases I can remember are `pi` (obsoleted by float-pi in 23.3) and `argv` and `argi` (both of which should also be made obsolete, tho haven't yet either)). For this reason it's declared obsolete in NEWS and in its docstring but not with `make-obsolete` :-( Maybe we should change the byte-compiler so it doesn't issue obsolescence warnings when the variable is lexically scoped? So we'd issue a warning for ... values ... but not for (let ((values ...)) ... values ...) ?
